No. 1 West Texas A&M sweeps MSU in home opener

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 1 West Texas A&M extended its torrid start to the season to 22-0 by sweeping Midwestern State 8-0 in five innings and 5-2 Friday night at Mustangs Park.

MSU, which fell to 15-11 on the season while moving to 3-3 in Lone Star Conference play, closes the four-game set with a twin bill on Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m.

West Texas A&M took advantage of a pair of MSU errors in the opener as five of its eight runs were unearned as the Lady Buffs scored four in the third and two in the fourth before closing out the game with solo home runs by Lacey Taylor and Allie Smith to clinch the run-rule in the fifth inning.

Kilee Halbert improved to 9-0 in the circle for WT allowing just one hit -- a Makenzi Harris double in the second inning -- as she struck out five and walked one.

Junior Erin Knox took her first loss in the circle for the Mustangs falling to 5-1 after allowing three earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Freshmen Taylor Mordecai and Misty Muniz provided the MSU offense in the nightcap with RBI singles in a two-run fourth inning.

That wasn't enough to overcome five-run second inning for West Texas A&M keyed by Brittany Gehle's bases-loaded, bases clearning double.

MSU junior Tayler Jerrick (2-3) allowed five runs -- all earned -- on four hits in two innings as the starter before freshman Peyton Helton came on to deal five innings of hitless relief.

Haley Howerton joined Mordecai with two hits to lead MSU's seven-hit attack in the nightcap.
