PORTALES, N.M. – Midwestern State swept the opening day of Lone Star Conference play following a 14-5 victory over Eastern New Mexico to wrap up Friday afternoon's doubleheader at ENMU Softball Field.
Midwestern State (14-8, 2-0 LSC) pounded out 20 hits for the game, tying for the second most in program history and most since the Mustangs set the school record with 21 back on Feb. 3, 2014.
Freshman
Makenzi Harris earned the win in the circle, throwing 5.0 innings with six strikeouts while allowing six hits, five runs and four walks to move to 4-1 on the season. Harris also led the Mustangs with a career-best four RBI while tying for the team lead with three hits.
The Mustangs went ahead 4-0 in the top of the first thanks to five singles and a walk to take an early lead on the Greyhounds.
The long ball helped Eastern New Mexico (7-9, 0-2 LSC) stay in the contest early with shortstop Susannah Chandler sending a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall to drive in two runs for the Greyhounds before a solo shot to center for center fielder Marleyna Pinon made it a 4-3 game after two innings of play.
A second RBI single for freshman right fielder
Taylor Mordecai upped the MSU lead to 5-3 in the third, scoring junior designated hitter
Baylee Voigt who singled to lead off the inning. Freshman second baseman
Misty Muniz pushed the MSU advantage to four two batters later with a two-RBI double to center field for a 7-3 ballgame.
After setting the MSU career home run record in game one of Friday's doubleheader, senior third baseman
Katelyn Vinson added to that mark with a solo shot to left field for an 8-3 contest in the fourth. Harris then stretched the lead to 9-3 with an RBI single to center field.
The Greyhounds added a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring off a wild pitch in the fourth and Chandler driving in a run in the fifth with a single to center for a 9-5 score.
Midwestern recorded its second-straight five-run seventh inning Friday with RBI singles from junior left fielder
Taylor Bermudes and Vinson opening up the scoring in the final frame. Junior first baseman
Erin Knox matched Vinson with three hits on the day with a double to center to add to the MSU lead. Harris then followed with her third hit with a two-RBI single to plate Knox and Vinson for a final 14-5.
Midwestern State looks for the series sweep of the Greyhounds tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (CT).
