Mustangs to host Angelo State for Senior Night Saturday

Midwestern State closes out its 2015-16 home slate Saturday at 4 p.m. when the Mustangs play host to Angelo State for Senior Night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Immediately following the conclusion of the women's game vs. Angelo State, Midwestern State will honor seniors Katie Brown, Rochelle Lauer, Kathryn Odom and Delize Paul in a ceremony leading up to the men's game against ASU

LAST TIME OUT
– Midwestern State snapped a seven-game losing skid Wednesday night at Texas A&M-Kingsville as the Mustangs earned their first road win of the season with a 68-63 win over the Javelinas at the Steinke Center
– Sophomore guard Whitney Taylor continued her hot streak with a career-high 26 points on five three-pointers to tally her fourth 20-point game of the season and her third in the last five games
– Sophomore guard Krishawn Crockett added 17 points for the Mustangs with eight coming in the final 1:25 to hold off a late rally by the Javelinas
– TAMUK matched its largest lead of the game at 23-18 with 4:53 to play in the second before MSU put together an 8-0 run behind a pair of triples from sophomore guard Kristin Rydell
– The Javelinas took a 39-38 advantage just over three minutes into the third quarter before another 8-0 MSU run vaulted the Mustangs to a 46-39 lead with 4:12 to play in the period
– The Mustangs grabbed their largest lead of the game at 54-42 late in the third before the Javelinas began to trim away at their deficit in the final period
– A 9-0 TAMUK run early in the fourth pulled the Javelinas to within two at 57-55 during a 5:22 scoring drought for the Mustangs
– A free throw from junior forward Jennifer Sissel ended the lull for the Mustangs before Taylor and Crockett helped seal the win for the Mustangs in the final two minutes of action
 
MUSTANGS PUNCH TICKET TO LSC CHAMPIONSHIPS
– With the win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday night, the Mustangs clinched a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament, Mar. 2-5, at the Allen Event Center in Allen
– The Mustangs currently sit in eighth place in the LSC standings with Eastern New Mexico holding a one-game lead on MSU with two regular season contests remaining
 
SCOUTING THE RAMBELLES
– Angelo State comes in with a 17-6 overall record and 10-3 mark in the LSC for second place in the conference standings
– The Rambelles are winners of seven of their last eight with their lone loss coming to Tarleton State in a 65-50 defeat at home
– ASU sports one of nation's most potent offenses with an average of 80.3 points per game for 10th nationally
– Three players are averaging double figures for the Rambelles this season, led by junior guard Taylor Dorsey with 16.2 points per game
– Dorsey also leads the Rambelles with 6.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game
– Junior post Jasmine Prophet (13.0 ppg) and senior guard Brea Mitchell (12.1 ppg) have also been strong contributors offensively for ASU with Prophet shooting a team-high 49.6 percent from the floor
– Head coach Kevin Baker is in his first season with the Rambelles after spending three seasons at NCAA Division III UT Tyler

INSIDE THE SERIES
– Angelo State holds a 31-29 advantage in the all-time series with Midwestern State after earning an 85-68 win over the Mustangs back on Jan. 23 in San Angelo
– The Mustangs have claimed six of the last 10 meetings with the Rambelles dating back to the 2011-12 season
– The series has favored the home team historically with each team recording wins at home more than 70 percent of the time
– Midwestern enters Saturday's matchup with a 21-9 record against ASU inside Ligon Coliseum, having won five of the last seven meetings

A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
– Midwestern State improved to 5-19 and 4-10 in the LSC after Wednesday's win over Texas A&M-Kingsville
– Sophomore guard Whitney Taylor climbed to 12.0 points per game on the season after her career-high 26-point outburst against the Javelinas
– Taylor has reached double figures in 12 of the last 13 games and has scored in double digits in all but two conference games this season
– The Melissa native ranks eighth in the LSC in scoring while coming in third in free-throw percentage (73.7) and 10th in three-pointers per game (1.5)
– In LSC play, Taylor is fifth in scoring with 14.1 points and ranks sixth with 1.7 triples per game
– Sophomore guard Krishawn Crockett has come on strong as of late for the Mustangs, reaching double figures six times in the last 10 games with a career-high 20 points coming at Angelo State
– Crockett is second for the Mustangs in scoring with 8.3 points per game while averaging 10.0 points in conference games this season
– Senior guard Kathryn Odom has dished out at least four assists in four of the last five games to propel herself to fifth in the conference with 3.4 assists per game during league play
– On the glass, junior forward Jennifer Sissel has pulled down 6.8 rebounds during conference play for sixth in the individual rankings
 
MSU SCHEDULE AMONG TOUGHEST IN NCAA DIVISION II
– Midwestern knew it faced an early season challenge with a young squad and a competitive non-conference schedule that featured four teams coming off NCAA Tournament appearances in 2015
– MSU's 10 non-conference opponents have not disappointed with a combined record of 151-87 (.634) as of Feb. 17
– The always competitive Lone Star Conference has added to the strength of MSU's schedule this season with nationally-ranked West Texas A&M and Texas Woman's, who has received votes in the national poll
– MSU's schedule is currently the second-toughest in NCAA Division II behind Tampa with opponents combining for a 265-165 mark (.616) this season

MUSTANGS THIRD IN LSC PRESEASON POLL
– Midwestern State was tabbed third in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll, voted on by the league's coaches, sports information directors and media representatives
– The Mustangs totaled 157 points behind preseason favorite West Texas A&M (220) and Texas Woman's (171)
– West Texas A&M collected 23 of the 25 first place votes while Texas Woman's and Cameron each tallied one vote
– The Mustangs went 12-4 to earn the No. 2 seed in the LSC postseason tournament last season
 
THE JOHNSON ERA
Noel Johnson is in her eighth season at the helm of the Mustangs women's basketball program in 2015-16
– Johnson has led MSU to a 118-103 record (.534) with four-straight winning seasons and three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances
– During Johnson's tenure, the Mustangs claimed their first NCAA Tournament wins in 2013 with victories over rival Tarleton State and Metro State (Colo.) before falling to No. 4 Colorado Mesa in the regional final
– That season, Johnson guided the Maroon and Gold to a 26-6 record, the second-most wins in school history, and a Lone Star Conference Championship, the first in 12 seasons
– Johnson garnered Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2012 before earning Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' Small College Coach of the Year accolades in 2013
