WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 13 Midwestern State didn't leave any suspense in another Homecoming blowout rolling UT-Permian Basin 76-21 in front of 8,772 fans Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
The Mustangs' scoring output was the second most in school history falling just shy of the record mark of 82 set at Western New Mexico during the 2001 season.
It was also the second biggest Homecoming stuffing and largest victory since a 73-6 rout of Texas A&M-Kingsville on Oct. 20, 2007. It's also MSU's eighth consecutive victory on Homecoming as the Mustangs improved to 7-1 on the season and 6-1 in league play.
MSU can clinch a share of its fourth Lone Star Conference championship with wins in the final two weeks beginning Saturday at Tarleton State and the following week in its regular season finale against Eastern New Mexico at Memorial Stadium.
Midwestern rolled up 610 yards of total offense which were the most since posting 676 last season against Tarleton State, while the 351 rushing yards were a season high.
The Mustangs scored in a multitude of ways early on as sophomore running back
Vincent Johnson, who needed five carries to rush for 82 yards with two first quarter touchdowns of 2 and 51 yards.
Junior
DeAndre Black returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown before
Jordan Meyers scooped and scored on a 26-yard fumble return to give the Mustangs a 28-0 lead with 5:11 to go in the first quarter.
Midwestern came up just a point shy of scoring its most points in a quarter as
Quade Coward hit
Gary Farquhar for a 10-yard score with 25 seconds to go in the first to go up 35-0.
Coward connected with
Brandon Sampson for a 20-yard score three minutes into the second quarter before departing the game going 5-for-9 for 145 yards with two touchdowns.
Sophomore
Layton Rabb hit on 7-of-8 passes for 101 yards and two more scoring strikes to
Quinton Childs (11) and
Breion Evans (5) while rushing for another TD.
Sophomore running back
Nicholas Gabriel ran for a a career-high 121 yards on 17 carries incluidng an 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, while Childs added a second touchdown on a 58-yard run to close out scoring in the fourth quarter.
UT-Permian Basin dropped its seventh straight game to fall to 2-7 and 0-7.
NOTES
* Midwestern State improved to 19-10 on Homecoming since bringing back football in 1988.
* The 76 points were the most scored in a Homecoming, but it was the third time the Mustangs cracked 70-point barrier. MSU handed Texas A&M-Kingsville its worst loss in program history 73-6 in 2007 and whipped No. 9-ranked Abilene Christian 70-28 in 2011.
* MSU improved to a combined 41-6-1 all-time against UT-Permian Basin in all sports.
* Midwestern State's 35 points in a single quarter were the most since MSU scored 36 in the first quarter of an 82-6 win at Western New Mexico in 2001.
* The Mustangs have won 35 of its last 38 games at Memorial Stadium since the start of the 2008 season.
* Sophomore running back
Vincent Johnson scored at least two touchdowns for the sixth time this season and now has 16 this season.
* Junior
DeAndre Black's 67-yard punt return for a touchdown was the seventh longest in school history. He becomes the 13th player to return a punt for a score in program history.
* Sophomore
Nicholas Gabriel is the fourth MSU rusher to go over 100 yards in a game this season joining quarterback
Quade Coward and fellow running backs
Vincent Johnson and
Adrian Seales.
* Junior cornerback
Jerrell Sykes has three pass breakups and an interception. The oskie was the fourth made in the opponent's end zone this season.
* Senior
Jordan Meyers returned a fumble 26 yards for a touchdown. It was the first since MSU scored three TDs off of fumble recoveries last season.
