No. 21 Regis powers past Mustangs, 14-8

LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 21 Regis (Colo.) scored eight of the final nine runs of the game to overcome a 7-6 deficit and come away with a 14-8 victory over Midwestern State Saturday afternoon at the Lady Chaps Invitational.

After Midwestern State (2-1) took a 7-6 advantage after a three-run third inning in a back-and-forth affair, a two-run bomb from senior pitcher Nicole Aviles gave Regis (2-1) the lead for good in the top of the fourth.

The Rangers stretched their lead out further in the sixth with a four-run frame thanks to a three-run homer from junior left fielder Alyssa Finger. Regis would tack up two more runs with four singles in the seventh to make it a final 14-8.

Regis opened up a 4-0 lead in the top of the first as the Rangers took advantage of three walks and an MSU error while also recording two hits in the inning.

However, the Mustangs answered by loading the bases with no outs to begin their first at bat. Senior center fielder Haley Howerton led off with a single down the left field line before junior left fielder Taylor Bermudes reached on a fielding error. Back-to-back walks and a fielder's choice drove in two runs for the Maroon and Gold, trimming the deficit in half at 4-2 after one.

In the bottom of the second, senior third baseman Katelyn Vinson brought home three runs with a double down the left field line to give MSU its first lead of the day with a 5-4 advantage.

After Regis regained the lead in the top of the third, a solo shot by junior first baseman Erin Knox evened the contest at 6-6 before a Howerton single drove in another run for the Mustangs to put MSU back in front at 7-6. Howerton later added MSU's final run of the game in the sixth inning off a Regis fielding error.

Howerton finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four singles while Knox and sophomore catcher Kara Tilton each added two hits for the Mustangs. Freshman pitcher Makenzi Harris (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings.

Aviles (1-1) earned the win for Regis, fanning six batters in 4.0 innings while allowing just two hits and one run.
