Mustangs play host to Southern Nazarene Tuesday

FOR STARTERS
After a trip to Denton for the Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere last weekend, Midwestern State returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum for a 5:30 p.m. matchup Tuesday against Southern Nazarene (Okla.).

LAST TIME OUT
– Midwestern State struggled to find its rhythm on the offensive end last weekend with a 60-36 setback to Colorado State-Pueblo and a 50-27 defeat to Colorado Christian
– The Mustangs were limited to 23 percent shooting in both contests with CCU holding MSU to its lowest scoring total in program history and forcing a season-high 26 turnovers Sunday
– The Mustangs' 27 points broke a previous program low of 31 that was set back on Feb. 10, 2007 against Angelo State
– Sophomore guard Krishawn Crockett led MSU with a career-high 15 points against CSU-Pueblo, shooting 5-of-16 from the floor
– Against the Lady Cougars, freshman forward Kendriana Washington tallied a team-best nine points while freshman post McKenna Villegas added six points
 
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON STORM
– Southern Nazarene is 1-1 on the season, falling to Henderson State (Ark.), 70-61, in the season opener before defeating Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) at home, 75-62
– 5-5 junior guard Abby Boyd is averaging 19.5 points to lead SNU, shooting 14-of-16 from the charity stripe
– Junior guard Danielle Gaddis (13.5) and sophomore forward LaShabra Plunkett (10.5) are also averaging double figures with Plunkett pacing SNU with 8.5 boards and 3.0 blocks
– Junior guard Chelseah Savage has dished out an average of 6.0 assists to lead the Crimson Storm
– Head coach Derek Dorris is in his fourth season at SNU with a career record of 42-43
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State is 9-7 in the all-time series against Southern Nazarene
– The Mustangs are winners of the last two matchups and four of the last six meetings
– The two teams have met just three times in the 21st century with MSU claiming wins during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons

– Sophomore guards Whitney Taylor and Krishawn Crockett are adding 7.0 and 6.0 points, respectively
– Freshman forward Kendriana Washington is averaging 5.6 points and is second on the team with 5.8 boards per game
 
MUSTANGS THIRD IN LSC PRESEASON POLL
– Midwestern State was tabbed third in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll, voted on by the league's coaches, sports information directors and media representatives
– The Mustangs totaled 157 points behind preseason favorite West Texas A&M (220) and Texas Woman's (171)
– West Texas A&M collected 23 of the 25 first place votes while Texas Woman's and Cameron each tallied one vote
– The Mustangs went 12-4 to earn the No. 2 seed in the LSC postseason tournament last season
 
THE JOHNSON ERA
– Noel Johnson enters her eighth season at the helm of the Mustangs women's basketball program
– Johnson has led MSU to a 113-84 record (.574) with four-straight winning seasons and three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances
– During Johnson's tenure, the Mustangs claimed their first NCAA Tournament wins in 2013 with victories over rival Tarleton State and Metro State (Colo.) before falling to No. 4 Colorado Mesa in the regional final
– That season, Johnson guided the Maroon and Gold to a 26-6 record, the second-most wins in school history, and a Lone Star Conference Championship, the first in 12 seasons
– Johnson garnered Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2012 before earning Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' Small College Coach of the Year accolades in 2013
 
LOOKING AHEAD
– Midwestern State begins a six-game road stretch Saturday with a 1 p.m. tip against Arkansas-Fort Smith
– The Mustangs' road swing consists of three games in the Lone Star State, one in Arkansas and two games in Las Vegas, Nevada
– The Mustangs will next return to Ligon Coliseum on Jan. 9 in their Lone Star Conference home opener against Eastern New Mexico, a stretch of 46 days between home games
