Happy Homecoming! Mustangs overtakes #22 A&M-Commerce in OT

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Chauncey Harris stretched the ball inside the pylon from 4 yards out to lift Midwestern State to a stirring 40-37 overtime win over 22nd-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce in front of a Homecoming crowd of 8,521 Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

The senior running back rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns as the Mustangs improved 5-2 on the season leaving a 17-point halftime deficit in the wake.

Texas A&M-Commerce senior quarterback Tyrik Rollison passed for 387 yards including 11 hookups for 180 yards to Vernon Johnson as the Lions built up a big early lead.

Rollison hit Johnson a 57-yard hitch on the opening possession, then the Lions pushed the lead to two touchdowns on a Joe Bergeron 1-yard run midway through the opening quarter.

Texas A&M-Commerce's Saul Martinez pushed the lead to 17-0 on a 33-yard field goal with 9:57 remaining in the first half.

The Mustangs sputtered to 126 yards of total offense and were forced to punt five times in the opening half.

But the Mustangs got it rolling in the second half.

Sophomore quarterback Quade Coward hit Breion Evans on a 25-yard flag route to finally crack the scoreboard almost three minutes into the third quarter.

Rollison and the Lions answered with a 38-yard strike to Jordan Jenkins before MSU clawed back with a 2-yard run by Coward to pull within 24-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs would 20 points in the final quarter with the first coming on a 32-yard Harris rush to pull within 10.

MSU's Travis Stephens stripped Bergeron and recovered the fumble to set up the Mustangs at the A&M-Commerce 25 on the next possession setting up a 6-yard strike to Mark Strange with 5:35 to play.

The Lions extended the lead back to a touchdown at 34-27 on the strength of Martinez' second field goal of the game — from 42 yards out — with 4:00 to play.

Harris capped off a quick 5-play, 75-yard drive with a 4-yard TD run with 1:59 to play to tie the game at 34-34.

Texas A&M-Commerce drove the ball down the field, but Martinez missed a 32-yard field goal as regulation expired.

The Lions settled for a 19-yard field goal to start the overtime before Harris finished the game with his heroics.

Midwestern State travels to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday at Javelina Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Texas A&M-Commerce dropped to 6-2 and 5-1.
