PREVIEW: Red River Rivalry continues on Saturday

TIPOFF
Midwestern State resumes play after a week off with the Red River Rivalry against Cameron. Due to the men's game being televised by the Lone Star Conference on Comcast SportsNet Houston, tipoff is set to follow the men about 6:30 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
Cameron comes to Ligon Coliseum with a 9-8 overall record, 1-6 in Lone Star Conference play after falling to Angelo State last Saturday at home in Lawton.  While the Aggies have only one LSC victory, that was against then LSC-leader Tarleton State 69-64 in Stephenville on Jan. 18.  Coach Tom Webb's Aggies are led by junior guard Jazzmine Robinson of Las Vegas, Nev./Mojave, who averages 11.5 points (ninth in the LSC), to go with 6.3 rebounds (fifth in the LSC) and 1.3 steals a game (15th in the LSC). Senior guard Chelsea Stamp of Crowley, Texas, adds 10.3 points (15th in the LSC) and leads the LSC with her 2.9 3-pointers a game, hitting 43.1 percent from the arc (fifth in the LSC). Senior guard Ali Brown of Chattanooga, Okla., adds 9.2 points (22nd in the LSC) and averaging 3.9 rebounds a contest, while senior Lacy Reinke of Lawton, Okla., leads the team with 6.4 rebounds a contest (sixth in the LSC), while scoring 7.7 points an outing. CU is averaging 71.5 points a contest, while allowing opponents 62.9 points a game.

ABOUT THE SERIES
One of the longest series in Midwestern State history, MSU meets Cameron for the 64th time when the Red River Rivalry comes to Wichita Falls on Saturday. Midwestern State leads the series 41- 22, and holds a decisive 23-6 record against the Aggies at Ligon Coliseum. Midwestern leads the series in Lawton 15-14, 1-0 on neutral floors and is tied with CU 2-2 in games where the site is unknown. The Mustangs have won eight of the last nine meetings with the Aggies, with a 69-49 win at Ligon on Jan. 26, 2013 and a 65-52 triumph at Lawton on Jan. 23, 2013. The lone CU victory since 2005 was a 67-51 decision in Lawton on Dec. 13, 2010.

LAST TIME OUT VS. CU
The Mustangs swept the Red River Rivalry with a 69-49 win over Cameron in Wichita Falls. MSU and Cameron were nip-and-tuck for most of the first half before the Mustangs went on a 25-6 in the final seven minutes of the half to never trail again. The Mustangs collected 14 points and eight assists from Kirsti Degelia, while Shambreka Jones posted a career-high 13 points with five rebounds. Shatoia Gober just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds in the contest. MSU shot an even 50 percent from the floor (30- of-60), and hit 3-of-12 3-pointers (25.0 percent), while racking up 6-of-12 from the foul line (50.0 percent). Cameron turned the ball over 25 times (MSU got 26 points off of them), while MSU suffered 13 turnovers (and gave up just seven points).

 
 

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State is 12-7 on the season, 4-4 in Lone Star Conference action. Coach Noel Johnson's Mustangs are led by junior All-America forward Andrea Carter who is averaging 14.6 points and 8.7 rebounds to rank third in the LSC in both, to go with 2.2 steals (fourth in the LSC), and shooting 53.2 percent (fifth in the LSC). Senior guard Kirsti Degelia adds 10.8 points (13th in the LSC) with 1.3 three-pointers a game (13th in the LSC), to go with 2.9 assists (12th in the LSC) and 1.3 steals (14th in the LSC).  Junior guard Dianna Jones adds 10.1 points a game (17th in the LSC) to go with her LSC leading 4.9 assists, 1.5 steals (eighth in the LSC) and her LSC leading 1.96 assist-turnover ratio. Junior guard Shatoia Gober chalks up 7.7 points a contest, as she pulls down 5.1 rebounds (18th in the LSC) with 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals. MSU averages 70.1 points a contest, while allowing 65.3.

LAST TIME OUT
The Mustangs allowed Texas A&M-Kingsville to control the open nine minutes of the first half and post a six-point lead only to rebound with a 13-0 run and added a 20-4 run in the second half as Midwestern State posted an 81-59 thumping of the Javelinas.  Andrea Carter tallied a season-high 21 points in the contest with six rebounds, while Lisa Hampton added 12 points (connecting on four 3-pointers) and Shatoia Gober just missed a double-double with 12 points and eight boards.  The Mustangs shot 51.0 percent from the floor (26-of-51), including 6-of-15 from the arc (40.0 percent) and shot 82.1 percent from the foul line (23-of-28), but were tied on the boards by the Javelinas 36-36.

MSU UNDER NOEL JOHNSON
Noel Johnson is 84-72 in her sixth year as the head coach of the Mustangs. She was the Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year in 2012 after turning the program around with a 19-8 season, then earned the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Small College Coach of the Year award for leading MSU to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 with a 26-6 record and the Lone Star Conference Championship.

MSU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Midwestern State started the season at number 10 in the WBCA's USA Today Sports Division II Top 25, but early losses dropped them to the first team receiving votes for the next three weeks. The Mustangs are currently not receiving votes in the poll.

CARTER HONORED AS LSC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Leading the Mustangs on both ends of the floor, Andrea Carter was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week as she paced Midwestern State to a pair of Lone Star Conference victories with a 67-63 road win at Angelo State and an 81-59 thrashing of Texas A&M-Kingsville at Ligon Coliseum.  The 5-10 junior forward from Angleton, Texas posted consecutive 20-point games, including her seventh double-double of the season during the week with her season-high 21 points against A&M-Kingsville and her 20-point, 12 rebound performance at Angelo State.  Her defensive play helped MSU hold A&M-Kingsville to shooting only 29.0 percent from the floor (16-of-55), a season-best in field goal defense for the Mustangs.  She led MSU in board work, averaging 9.0 rebounds for the week (6.5 per outing defensively) and averaged 3.5 steals a contest, with five at Angelo State.  For the week, Carter shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the floor including 1-of-2 (50 percent) from the 3-point arc.  She also connected on 8-of-10 from the free throw line and tallied 2.5 assists.

THREE...DOT...THOUGHTS...
The Mustangs put together consecutive wins for the first time since the calendar turned to 2014 with the 67-63 win at Angelo State and the 81-59 victory at home over Texas A&M-Kingsville … The 22-point win over the Javelinas was the second-largest of the for MSU … The Mustangs shot 51.0 percent from the floor against TAMUK (26-of-51), recording their fifth game shooting 50 percent or better this season.  It was the second-best shooting performance of the year … MSU held TAMUK to 29.1 percent shooting (16-of-55), a season-best for field goal defense… Midwestern has limited opponents' scoring over the last five games, holding all to 66 points or less with an average of 57.8 points allowed over the span … The Mustangs have held nine of their last 11 opponents under 70 points, with those two each scoring 71 … MSU has done well at the free throw line the last five games, going 81-of-102 for a 79.4 percentage, with three games over 80 percent … MSU was out rebounded by Angelo State 36-33 and tied the Javelinas on the boards at 36 each marking the fifth straight game where MSU was either behind or tied on the boards.  MSU is 3-4 when being out rebounded by opponents and 2-2 when both teams have an equal number of rebounds.  The Mustangs are 7-1 when having a rebounding advantage … The Rambelles was just the second time MSU has beaten ASU at the Junell Center and did it in consecutive meetings … Senior Kirsti Degelia of Denton, Texas/Krum moved into seventh on MSU's career scoring list with her 13 points against ASU and nine against TAMUK to post 1,272 points, passing Dee Wood (1987-91) with 1,255 and Annette George (1981-85) with 1,255.  She is 123 points away from Lounette Adkins Decker (1978-79, 80-81, 93-95) with 1,395 points in sixth … Degelia also ranks eighth at MSU win 296 career assists and needs eight more to pass J.J. Anderson (1997-2001) with 303 in seventh … Degelia is 15th on the MSU career steal's list with 143 and needs five to pass the 147 of J.J. Anderson (1997-2001) and Stacey Staten (2004-08) … Junior forward Andrea Carter of Angleton, Texas is once again third in the Lone Star Conference in scoring and rebounding and fourth in steals, averaging 14.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.2 steals a game.  She also ranks fifth in field goal percentage (53.2 percent), seventh in free throw percentage (74.0 percent) and 11th in blocked shots (0.4) … Carter is MSU's 10th woman to grab 600 career rebounds and is eighth at MSU all-time with 655 she needs 12 boards to pass Rulinda Vogtsberger (1978-81) with 666 in seventh … Carter is also 12th in career steals at MSU, with 162 and needs five more to pass Jennifer Butler (1994-99) with 166 in 11th …
