STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- No. 22 Midwestern State survived a furious rally by Tarleton State to sweep the TexAnns 6-1 and 11-10 Friday night at the TSU Softball Complex.
Â
The Mustangs have won five straight and nine of their last 10 to improve to 33-12 on the season and to 10-7 in Lone Star Conference play while TSU slipped to 21-17 and 9-8.
Â
The teams complete the three-game set with a single game on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon.
GAME 1: MIDWESTERN STATE 6, TARLETON STATE 1
Freshman outfielder
Katelyn Vinson slugged her 15th homer and drove in four runs to lead Midwestern State to a 6-1 win over Tarleton State in Game 1 Friday night at the TexAnn Softball Complex.
Â
The Southlake Carroll product drilled a 2-1 offering from TSU starter Randi Fentress for an opposite field, three-run homer over the right-field fence to spark a four-run first inning rally.
Â
Vinson drove in a fourth run on her sixth double of the campaign in the second inning while senior outfielder
Courtney Bingham added a pair of RBI two-baggers in the first two frames.
Â
Second baseman Kelsey Latta accounted for Tarleton State's lone tally of the game on a solo homer in the first inning as MSU freshman Kat Batey improved to 13-5 in the circle allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
Â
Junior catcher
Kim Jerrick joined Bingham and Vinson with two hits each to pace MSU's 8-hit attack.
Â
Fentress took the loss for the TexAnns to fall to 12-11 on the season. She allowed six runs - four earned - on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
GAME 2: MIDWESTERN STATE 11, TARLETON STATE 10
Midwestern State fended off the TexAnns' furious seven-run, sixth inning rally to come away with an 11-10 win in the night cap.
Â
Freshman second baseman
Chelsey Wall fueled a four-run rally in the fifth inning with a three-run double to the right-field gap as the Mustangs would push the advantage to 7-1 with another run in the top of the sixth frame.
Â
MSU battered former teammate
Brenna Hennan with a season-high 18 hits as the sophomore from Burkburnett took the loss to fall to 9-5 allowing a season-high 11 runs on 18 hits as she was forced to throw 200 pitches in the near 3-hour marathon.
Â
But the TexAnns took advantage of a walk and two hit batsmen to come alive in a seven-run sixth inning highlighted by Arianna Rodriguez' grand slam which gave TSU a short-lived 8-7 lead.
Â
MSU junior catcher
Kim Jerrick pulled the Mustangs even with program single-season record 16th homer to left field to lead off the seventh. Midwestern tacked on three more runs courtesy of a
Kelley Schaefer run-scoring single, an error and a sacrifice fly by Wall.
Â
And MSU needed every one of the runs. Tarleton State countered with a one-out double by Courtney Vroman and two-out, two-run run from Tanner Pipkin to pull back within a run in the bottom of the inning.
Â
MSU starter
Laci Belovsky held on for her 20th win of the season allowing 10 runs -- all earned -- on nine hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Â
Schaefer matched a school record with five hits for the second this season, while senior outfielder
Courtney Bingham lashed her 20th double of the campaign to set another program single-season high mark.
Â
Eight different MSU hitters accounted for multiple hits in the game including Jerrick, Bingham, Schaefer, Wall, Belovsky,
Haley Howerton and
Katelyn Vinson.
