Mustangs complete sweep of Tarleton, blast TexAnns 17-8

STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- No. 22-ranked Midwestern State answered the bell again Saturday afternoon completing a Lone Star Conference sweep of Tarleton State with a 17-8 win for its seventh consecutive victory over the TexAnns dating back to last season.

The Mustangs extended its winning streak to six games including victories in 10 of their last 11 games to improve to 34-12 on the season and to 11-7 in league play.

And MSU needed just the last three innings to post a season scoring high at the TSU Softball Complex.

After the TexAnns drew first blood on starting pitcher Randi Fentress' RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead, the Mustangs erupted.

Singles by Chelsey Wall, Kim Jerrick, Courtney Bingham and Kelley Schaefer preceded Katelyn Vinson's 16th homer of the season - a three-run shot to center field to give the Mustangs a 5-1 lead.

Vinson's blast matches  Jerrick for the most home runs in a single season as both past the previous mark of 15 set back Mallory Mooney (2011) over the weekend against Tarleton State.

MSU pushed the lead to 9-1 on the strength of a 4-run seven with run driven by Haley Howerton, Bingham and Vinson to put the Mustangs on a the verge of a run-rule victory.

But the TexAnns struck for five runs in the sixth inning on the strength of a three-run homer by Katelyn Conlee and two-run triple by Bailee Mauldin to push the game to the seventh inning.

The Mustangs tallied eight runs keyed by Chelsey Wall's first collegiate grand slam to put the game away.

Freshman pitcher Kat Batey improved to 14-5 in the circle allowing four earned runs on seven hits in five innings.

Vinson matched a single-game program record with six RBIs while going 3-for-5 at the plate while Jerrick (2 RBIs) and Bingham (3 RBIs) also had three safeties to lead the Mustangs' 16-hit attack.

Midwestern plays host to Cameron for a single game Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
