MSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GAME DAY: Mustangs close homestand against Texas A&M-Commerce

The Mustangs are looking to snap a quick two-game skid as they close a four-game homestand against Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday. 
 
Midwestern State (18-5, 13-4) was shocked by Angelo State 54-48 on Saturday to fall from first to third in the Lone Star Conference race.  A&M-Commerce (8-13, 6-10) defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville 77-74 at home on Saturday.
 
Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

Midwestern State closes out a four-game homestand after falling into third place in the LSC because of a pair of home losses.

MSU is a full game behind Abilene Christian in first and a half game in back of Tarleton State in second.

The Mustangs are paced by the powerful duo of junior Kirsti Degelia and sophomore Andrea Carter.

Degelia, who was the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 14 after chalking up a career-high 27 points against Tarleton State, leads the Mustangs offensively. The honorable mention All-Lone Star Conference performer a season ago is a junior from Denton, Texas/Krum who is fourth in the LSC in scoring with 15.6 points a game (96th in Division II), and is fourth in the league with 3.4 assists a contest while grabbing 4.3 rebounds a game.

Carter has picked up the LSC Defensive Player of the Week award for the four times to go with the LSC Offensive Player of the Week award she collected earlier this season.  She has posted 12 double-doubles in 23 games this season (12th in Division II).  The sophomore from Angleton is second on the team and ninth in the LSC with a 12.5 scoring average, while standing fourth in the LSC with a 50.0 field goal percentage (103-of-206).  She leads the squad, is second in the LSC and 18th nationally with 10.3 rebounds and is second in the conference with 2.4 steals a contest (78th in Division II).

Sophomore Shatoia Gober of Waco, Texas/Midway contributes 9.3 points a contest to go with her 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals an outing.  She is also shooting 46.8 percent from the floor (87-of-186).

MSU is averaging 68.1 points with 39.7 rebounds a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 59.3 points a contest.

The Mustangs women are in their annual Play 4 Kay/Cancer Awareness week this week.

ABOUT THE LIONS


Texas A&M-Commerce snapped a four-game losing streak with the win over A&M-Kingsville.

The Lions of coach Nicole Anderson are 8-13 overall, 6-10 in the LSC.

Junior forward Breanna Harris of Mansfield, Texas/Summit leads the squad with 15.1 points a game (fifth in the LSC, 116th in Division II) to go with her 10.3 rebounds (third in the LSCand 21st nationally), 45.8 field goal percentage (11th in the LSC, 79th nationally) and 11 double-doubles (third in the LSC, 17th nationally).
 
Sophomore forward La'Tisha Hearne of Richardson, Texas adds 8.5 points a contest (27th in LSC) to go with 5.8 rebounds (13th in the LSC) and a team leading 30 steals (1.5 per game).
 
Junior guard Daniel Dixon of Arlington, Texas averages 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds.
 
The Lions average 60.4 points a game (sixth in the LSC), while allowing 66.3 ppg (10th in the LSC).

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State meets Texas A&M-Commerce for the 55th time when they meet at Ligon Coliseum on Wednesday evening.
 
Midwestern State holds a 37-17 lead in the series that dates back to the 1976-77 season.
 
MSU holds a commanding 19-5 under the Dome at Ligon Coliseum.
 
This is the second meeting of the season for MSU and TAMUC.  The Mustangs posted a 54-41 victory in Commerce on Jan. 9.  It marked the fifth straight win in the series for the Mustangs.
 
Last season, the Mustangs swept the Lions by winning 81-44 in Commerce on Nov. 30, 2011, and then taking a 74-58 triumph at Ligon Coliseum on Jan. 25, 2012.
 
The last time TAMUC defeated MSU it was under the Dome on Dec. 17, 2008 when the Lions claimed a 79-72 win.
