ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State plays the third game of a four-game homestand, the season's longest, but comes off a loss at home for the first time in a year.
The 11-game streak was the longest winning streak this season and was the second longest in MSU history. MSU is tied with Abilene Christian in first place in the Lone Star Conference, a half-game in front of Tarleton State in the standings.
Midwestern received votes this week in the WBCA's USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released on Tuesday, the first in five reporting weeks. MSU jumped up with 24 points and sit five away from climbing into the poll for a second time this season.
The Mustangs are paced by the powerful duo of junior Kirsti Degelia and sophomore Andrea Carter.
Degelia, who was the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week after chalking up a career-high 27 points against Tarleton State, leads the Mustangs offensively. The honorable mention All-Lone Star Conference performer a season ago is a junior from Denton, Texas/Krum is third in the LSC in scoring with 15.7 points a game (87th in Division II), and is fifth in the league with 3.4 assists a contest while grabbing 4.3 rebounds a game.
Carter picked up the LSC Defensive Player of the Week award for the fourth time this week to go with the LSC Offensive Player of the Week award she has also collected earlier this season. She has posted 12 double-doubles in 22 games this season (eighth in Division II). The sophomore from Angleton is second on the team and eighth in the LSC with a 12.8 scoring average, while standing third in the LSC with a 50.8 field goal percentage (101-of-199). She leads the squad, is second in the LSC and 14th nationally with 10.5 rebounds and is second in the conference with 2.5 steals a contest (69th in Division II).
Sophomore Shatoia Gober of Waco, Texas/Midway contributes 9.5 points a contest to go with her 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals an outing. She is also shooting 47.5 percent from the floor (84-of-177).
MSU is averaging 69.0 points with 39.9 rebounds a game. The Mustangs allow opponents 59.5 points a contest.
The Mustangs women are in their annual Play 4 Kay/Cancer Awareness week this week.
Corresponding with the same week of the WBCA's sponsored campaign honoring the late North Carolina State coach Kay Yow, the Mustangs will don pink uniforms (donated by Texas Oncology) for today's games at Ligon Coliseum, as they did against Eastern New Mexico and Abilene Christian.
Fans have the opportunity to place silent auction bids to purchase the uniforms, along with other selected items, with the proceeds being donated to fund cancer research.
It's the third year MSU has supported this effort.
