THE SCOOP
The 10th ranked Mustangs play their home opene as the Texas A&M International Dust Devils come to Ligon Coliseum. Midwestern State (1-1 overall) is coming off a 64-56 loss at Adams State (Colo.) last Saturday. It's the official season opener for A&M International (10-16 last season, 5-7 Heartland Conference), but the Dust Devils fell in an exhibition game on Nov. 3 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 76-50.
SCOUTING THE DUST DEVILS
The TAMIU Dust Devils of first-year head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson return their top three leading scorers from last season. Senior guard Tina Dang led the Devils in scoring last season, averaging 13.8 points a game while connecting on 3.0 three-pointers a game. Senior guard Samantha Chacon tallied 12.7 points a contest in 2012-13 and averaged 1.3 treys a contest to go with her 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals. Senior forward Malika Jackson put up 10.6 points a game and led the team with 7.2 rebounds a contest as she shot 52.3 percent from the floor. The Devils averaged 64.7 points a game last year, while allowing 67.0 ppg.
In their exhibition, Chacon scored 17 points with seven rebounds, while newcomer Jessica Prieto added 11 points with seven boards and Dan 10 points with a pair of treys.
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
The Mustangs are coming off a weekend where they defeated Colorado State-Pueblo 70-57, then lost to Adams State 65-56 in the Adams State Bankers Classic Conference Challenge. MSU, the defending Lone Star Conference Champion, is being led by All-American junior Andrea Carter who is averaging 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds a contest with one double-double this season. Junior guard Lisa Hampton is averaging 11.5 points a game with 3.0 threes an outing while shooting 70.0 percent from the floor. Junior guard Dianna Jones adds 9.5 points with 2.5 assists a game, while junior guard Shatoia Gober puts in 8.5 points with 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals an outing. MSU is averaging 63.0 points and allowing 60.5 a contest.
ABOUT THE SERIES
This is the second time Midwestern State has played Texas A&M International, with MSU leading the series 1-0. The Mustangs beat the Dust Devils exactly two years ago to the day, Nov. 12, 2011, 98-76 at Ligon Coliseum.
LAST TIME OUT
The Mustangs fell to Adams State 64-56. Andrea Carter led the way with 13 points and eight rebounds in 32 minutes of action. Dianna Jones added 10 points, going 4-of-9 from the floor, while Shatoia Gober popped in eight points with five rebounds and three steals. The Mustangs shot only 34.5 percent from the floor (20-of-58) and 22.2 percent from the arc (2-of-9) to go with 14-of-25 shooting (56 percent) from the line. Adams hit 44.2 percent from the floor (19-of-43), 46.2 percent from the arc (6-of-13) and 20-of-29 from the foul line (69 percent).
MSU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Midwestern State opens the season in a spot they have never been before ... ranked in the WBCA's USA Today Sports Division II Top 25. And not just in the top 25, but the Top 10. At number 10, MSU has its highest-ever ranking in the poll after climbing to 19th in the final poll of the season in 2012-13. MSU was ranked in the Top 25 three times last season. MSU made history on Dec. 18 when it was ranked 25th and entered the Division II Top 25 for the first time in school history and returned at 25 in the last poll before the NCAA Tournament. At season's end, the Mustangs received votes in 10 weeks of the poll for the first time in a season, bettering last season's record of five weeks. MSU has now received votes in the poll 18 times, 16 weeks since the 2011-12 season and getting votes in the Jan. 10, 2002 and Nov. 28, 2001 editions of the poll.
