WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GAME DAY: Mustangs close 5-game road swing at Texas A&M-Commerce

The Mustangs close a five-game road swing and seek their third consecutive win on Wednesday as they visit Texas A&M-Commerce. 

Midwestern State (9-3, 4-2) is coming off a 69-59 triumph at Angelo State on Saturday, their first win over the Belles in San Angelo since 1997.  Texas A&M-Commerce (5-5, 3-2) is coming off a 63-58 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday in South Texas.

Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.Wednesday at the A&M-Commerce Field House in Commerce.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

Midwestern State closes its longest road swing of the season, five games, with Wednesday's game at Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Mustangs have won two in a row, but after suffering consecutive losses after attainig a No. 25 ranking in the Dec. 18 WBCA's USA Today Sports Division II Coaches Poll, MSU has dropped out of the voting in the poll.

The Mustangs are paced by the powerful duo of junior Kirsti Degelia and sophomore Andrea Carter.

Degelia leads the Mustangs offensively. The honorable mention All-Lone Star Conference performer a season ago is a junior from Denton, Texas/Krum who's leads the LSC in scoring with 16.3 points a game, and averages 2.8 assists a contest (eighth in the LSC) while grabbing 4.9 rebounds a game.

Carter won the LSC Defensive Player of the Week award for the third time this week to go with the LSC Offensive Player of the Week award she has also collected earlier this season.  She has posted six double-doubles in 12 games this season.  The sophomore from Angleton is second on the team and ninth in the LSC with a 13.1 scoring average.  She leads the squad, is second in the LSC and 17th nationally with 10.5 rebounds and is second in the conference with 2.8 steals a contest (40th in Division II).

Sophomore Shatoia Gober of Waco, Texas/Midway contributes 10.0 points a contest to go with her 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals an outing.  She is also shooting 50.5 percent from the floor (50-of-99).

Sophomore Diana Jones of Hewitt, Texas/Midway is averaging 8.3 points a game, adds 3.4 assists an outing, second in the LSC.  She has nailed 12-of-34 3-point attempts (.353) to go with her 1.8 steals a contest.

MSU is averaging 71.5 points with 40.6 rebounds a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 62.9 points a contest.

ABOUT THE LIONS

Texas A&M-Commerce has won back-to-back games for the first time since winning the first three contests of the season.  The five wins so far this season are more than A&M-C has claimed in the last two seasons combined.  A&M-Commerce is also a daunting 4-1 in the confines of the A&M-C Field House.

The Lions of coach Nicole Anderson are 5-5 overall, 3-2 in the LSC.  The Belles have LSC losses to Angelo State and at Abilene Christian.  A&M-C beat Incarnate Word 60-51 in Commerce last week.

A&M-C is paced by junior forward Breanna Harris of Mansfield/Summit who is averaging 14.0 points and 9.6 rebounds, fifth in LSC in scoring and third in rebounding.  She's shooting 41.9 percent from the floor (52-of-124).

Sophomore forward La'Tisha Hearne of Richardson averages 9.0 points a game with 5.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals.

Center Amber Carver, a 6-5 junior from Pollock, Texas/Central, adds 8.8 points and 8.0 rebounds a game to go with her 1.3 blocks an outing.

The Lions average 63.0 points a game, while allowing 65.9 points.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State takes on the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions for the 54th time when they meet Wednesday.
 
Midwestern State leads the series 36-17, and holds the lead in the series at Commerce 13-11, all in the A&M-C Field House.
 
Midwestern is 19-5 against the Lions at Ligon Coliseum, holds a 1-0 record in neutral site games and owns a 3-1 record in games where the site is unknown.
 
MSU has won the last four games in the series.
 
The Mustangs claimed a 74-58 win at Ligon Coliseum on Jan. 25, 2012 after beating the Lions 81-44 at Commerce on Nov. 30, 2011.
