AMARILLO, Texas – The No. 16 Midwestern State women stand in second just five strokes off the pace after a first round 309 at the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Stampede on Monday at the Tascosa Country Club.
Â
The Mustangs battled high winds throughout the day that created tough conditions for all the golfers on the par 72, 5925 yard layout.
Â
Midwestern was paced by the play of sophomore
Brenna Moore and senior
Kendra Whittley who are tied for ninth at 4-over-par 76. Senior
Lindsay Burkhart posted a 6-over 78 to sit 15th after the first round, while senior
Taylor Klutts added a 7-over 79 in 18th. Senior
Lauren Romines added an 81 for MSU as well.
Â
Playing as an individual,
Kynze Mann added an 87 in first round play.
Â
The Mustangs trail Lubbock Christian who posted a 304 to lead the way by five and are four strokes better than Newman (Kan.) at 313.
Â
The Mustangs nemesis was the 18th hole on Monday. MSU lost six strokes on that hole alone as the strong wind allowed both Whittley and Burkhart to send their approach shots over the green and have trouble getting back. Burkhart posted a double-bogey six on the hole, while Whittley carded a triple-bogey seven.
Â
There is a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard after the first round with Chantry McMahan of Texas A&M-Commerce, Leina Kim of Colorado State-Pueblo and Anna Schopp of Lubbock Christian all at 1-over 73.
Â
The final round is Tuesday.
