DENTON, Texas - Texas Woman's University cashed in an error for three unearned runs in the sixth inning to cap a 6-5 come-from-behind win in Game 1 over Midwestern State in Lone Star Conference play Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Mustangs, who slipped to 14-20 on the season and to 4-10 in league play while TWU improved to 29-8 and 11-2.
The ill-fated from spoiled a great start by the Mustangs who made a favorable response to a lineup shake-up which vaulted sophomore
Kim Jerrick to the leadoff spot for the first time in her collegiate career.
The Belle Plaine, Kan. native laced a leadoff single to left field and came around to score on an error to give MSU an early 1-0 lead.
Jerrick then capped a three-run second inning by launching her fifth homer of the season for a two-run shot over the center-field fence after
Nicki Duff and
Christina Roosmalen had reached on a single and double respectively to lead off the frame to stake the Mustangs to a 4-1 lead.
Texas Woman's narrowed the lead to a single run on a sacrifice fly and a solo homer to left field by Lizzy Kelly in the bottom of the second, but Midwestern starter
Brenna Hennan would make the lead stand by limiting the Pioneers to three hits through the first five innings.
The Mustangs added an insurance run on Roosmalen's run-scoring single up the middle to score
Kelley Schaefer for a 5-3 lead.
But TWU's Tiffany Weise reached on a dropped pop-up and TWU would load the bases with two outs on a single by Jordan Readicker and a fielder's choice.
The Pioneers pulled within a run on Sarah Wittenburg's sacrifice fly before Kathryn Williams gave TWU its first lead of the game with a two-run single down the right field line.
Hennan took the tough luck loss to fall to 2-9 allowing three runs on five hits in her third complete game of the season.
Katie Hines allowed one run on three hits in four innings of relief to move to 14-1 on the season before Larisa Garcia came on to pitch a scoreless seventh for her seventh save of the season.
The teams wrap up the three-game set today at 3 p.m.
