Mustangs return favor to take 5-4 comeback win over TWU in series finale

DENTON, Texas - Christina Roosmalen's double to the right-field gap drove in the winning run as Midwestern State turn the tables on Texas Woman's University with a come-from-behind victory of its own taking a 5-4 decision in eight innings in the nightcap at Pioneer Field on Saturday.

The win snapped a four-game skid for the Mustangs who improved to 15-20 on the season and to 5-10 in conference play while sending LSC leading TWU to 29-9 and 11-3. The victory also snapped a nine-game road losing streak dating back to a 9-1 win at Ouachita Baptist on Feb. 6.

Midwestern State returns to Mustangs Park for a three-game set against Tarleton State next weekend with a single game Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.

Texas Woman's jumped out to an early 4-0 lead highlighted by a two-run single by Kendra Sancet in the first while Lizzy Kelly and Bailey Vrazel drove in runs in the second to chase MSU starter Brenna Hennan, who allowed four runs on four hits in two innings of work.

Fellow freshman Lindsi Glenn settled in for her second longest shutout stretch of the season. The left-hander blanked the Pioneer for six frames and permitted just four hits with a season-high five strikeouts to improve to 13-10.

Glenn's showing in the circle allowed the Mustangs to rally for two runs in the fourth as Roosmalen and freshman Lisa Licata tallied RBIs to cut the deficit in half at 4-2.

The Mustangs loaded the bases without benefit of a hit in the seventh as TWU starter Larisa Garcia hit Carey Campbell with a pitched, walked Kim Jerrick and issued an intentional free pass to Courtney Bingham.

Freshman Kelley Schaefer made the Pioneers pay with a two-run single up the middle to send the game to extra innings tied at 4-4.

Senior left fielder Nicki Duff reached on a one-out infield single and stole second before scoring on Roosmalen's ringing double to the right-field gap to seal the victory in the eighth.

Katie Hines suffered just her second defeat of the season for TWU to fall to 14-2. The sophomore right-hander allowed one run on two hits in her lone inning of relief.

Notables

  • Freshman pitcher Lindsi Glenn has posted a 4-2 mark with a 1.92 ERA in relief appearances this season. Her two longest shutout stretches have come in a relief role as she spun seven innings of shutout ball in a 5-2 win over St. Edward's on Feb. 25 before posting six shutout innings in a 5-4 win at Texas Woman's University on Saturday.
  • Midwestern State have won three games this season in which they trailed after six innings after claiming a 5-4 come-from-behind win Saturday in Game 2 over Texas Woman's. MSU other comeback wins came 3-2 against Incarnate Word on Feb. 23 and 6-5 over Central Missouri on Feb. 25.
  • Freshman Kelley Schaefer notched her eighth multiple-RBI game of the season after driving in the tying runs of Game 2 Saturday at Texas Woman's University. She is currently on a season-best three-game hitting streak and has reached base in five consecutive games.
  • Junior right fielder Courtney Bingham has drawn three intentional walks this season. No other MSU player has been issue any more than one intentional free pass in a season in program history. Kristen Stonecipher is the only other MSU player to draw two intentional walks during her career from 2005-08. Interestingly, Bingham has reached via the catcher's interference four times in her career. The feat has only been accomplished seven times in club history.
  • Midwestern State's Courtney Bingham, Mallory Mooney and Christina Roosmalen have combined for nine strikeouts in 333 at bats this season.
  • Junior center fielder Elena Bennett needs one hit to become the fourth member of MSU's 200-hit club joining Kristen Stonecipher (270 hits/2005-08), Jessica Rodriguez (215 hits/2006-09) and Mallory Mooney (214 hits/2009-present).
  • MSU's opposition has scored five-or-more runs in 23 of 35 games this season after scoring as many runs in 26 games over the past three seasons (180 games).
