Jerrick homers, drives in three to lead MSU past LSC-leading TexAnns

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Kim Jerrick connected on a leadoff home run and drove in three runs as Midwestern State knocked off Lone Star Conference leader Tarleton State 5-3 Friday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs and TexAnns close out the three-game league series with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitches are set for noon and 2 p.m.

Jerrick's leadoff blast to center field was her sixth homer of the season and staked MSU starter Lindsi Glenn to the early 1-0 lead.

Tarleton State's McKaylee Pittman highlighted a three-run, four-hit second inning with a three-run blast to center field to give the TexAnns a 3-1 lead, but Glenn would settle in the rest of the way to move to 14-10 on the season.

The southpaw from Healdton scattered four hits over the remaining five innings with three strikeouts and three walks.

Freshman shortstop Kelley Schaefer narrowly missed a home run with a rope off of the top of the fence in left-center field and had to settle for a long single to lead off the bottom of the second. She would eventually narrow the deficit to 3-2 while scoring on a wild pitch.

The Mustangs regained the lead with a pair runs in the fourth inning as Nicki Duff and Christina Roosmalen struck for consecutive singles to lead off the frame before moving to second and third on Lisa Licata's well executed sacrifice bunt.

Jerrick followed with a two-run single through the left side of the Tarleton infield to give MSU a 4-3 lead.

The Mustangs used the speed game to tack on an insurance run in the fifth inning after Mallory Mooney reached on a leadoff single to left field. Junior outfielder Megan Chartier came on to pinch run and immediate stole second base.

Duff drew a two-walk and Chartier moved to third on a wild pitch before the Mustangs successfully completed a double steal to give Glenn a 5-3 edge.

Samantha Swanda took the loss for Tarleton State to fall to 15-4 on the season. The right-hander allowed five runs on six this with four walks and three strikeouts in six innings of work.

Jerrick paced MSU's six-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Notables

- Midwestern State knocked off a conference leader for the second consecutive game. Texas Woman's University also led the LSC until the Mustangs claimed a 5-4 win over the Pioneer last Saturday.

- Freshman shortstop Kelley Schaefer extended her team-best active hitting streak to four games with a single off of the top of the fence in the fourth inning. Junior first baseman Christina Roosmalen, sophomore catcher Kim Jerrick and senior left fielder Nicki Duff all have three-game hitting streaks.

- Sophomore catcher Kim Jerrick matched a season high with three RBIs Friday afternoon against Tarleton State. She has now driven in multiple runs in seven games this season.

- Sophomore catcher Kim Jerrick's leadoff home run in the first inning Friday against Tarleton State was the first leadoff shot for MSU since Natalie Rodriguez led off with a bomb in the Game No. 3 of the South Central Super Regionals against Angelo State on May 22, 2010 at Mustangs Park.

- Senior third baseman Mallory Mooney will become just the sixth players in MSU program history to play in 200 career games Saturday against Tarleton State. She will join Kristen Stonecipher (238 starts) and Jessica Rodriguez (229 starts) as the only players to log 200 career starts for Midwestern. Mooney still needs one homer to match Rachael Jackson's record of 28 career homers and three RBIs to tie Stonecipher (172) for the all-time RBI lead.

- Lindsi Glenn's 14 wins are the third most by a freshman hurler in school history. Katie Petersen won 25 games in 2007 while Ashley Kuchenski notched 15 wins in 2006.
