Incarnate Word takes Game 2, 6-4

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Incarnate Word struck for three home runs over the final two innings to overtake Midwestern State 6-4 in the final game of a three-game Lone Star Conference series Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Still, the Mustangs claimed two of three games over UIW during the weekend to move to 14-17 on the season and to 4-8 in league play.

MSU steps out of the LSC to take on Texas Tech Tuesday night at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock. First pitch for the single game is set for 7 p.m.

The Red Raiders (26-7) touched off its current nine-game winning streak with wins over No. 23 New Mexico on March 12 at home.

The Mustangs got to reigning LSC Pitcher of the Week Briana Sanchez with four runs by sending 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning.

Junior first baseman Christina Roosmalen pushed a bunt past a drawn in infield to plate pinch runner Megan Chartier in from second base before Elena Bennett looped a one-out bases loaded single over the short stop to knot the game at 2-2.

Senior third baseman Mallory Mooney followed with a two-run single down the left-field line to give the Mustangs a 4-2 lead.

But that's all MSU could muster off of a Sanchez who surrendered only six hits but issued 10 walks as the Mustangs stranded 14 runners and left the bases loaded in the first, fourth and seventh innings.

Sanchez did notch seven strikeouts while improving to 12-5 on the season.

Incarnate Word battled back for a run in the fifth before Sarah O'Brien belted her third homer of the season in the sixth frame. Alex Yarbrough and Melanie Padilla struck for homers in the seventh to give the Cardinals a 6-4 lead.

Freshman Brenna Hennan was saddled with the loss to fall to 2-8 on the season. The right-hander allowed four runs on five hits while walking five in three innings of relief.

Lindsi Glenn allowed two unearned runs on six hits and walked three before leaving with a sore arm after four innings.

Freshman shortstop Kelley Schaefer paced the Mustangs with three hits while Padilla and O'Brien logged four hits each for Incarnate Word.

The Cardinals improved to 18-11 on the season and 6-6 in LSC play.

Notables

  • Junior center fielder Elena Bennett accounted for three steals in Game 2 Saturday to match a school record. It's the seventh time an MSU player has swiped three bases in a game and the second time Bennett achieved the feat as she also had three stolen bases against Northeastern State on March 20, 2011.
  • The Mustangs accounted for six stolen bases in Game 2 Saturday against Incarnate Word to match a school team single game record. Elena Bennett had three steals while Courtney Bingham, Mallory Mooney and Kim Jerrick had one each. It's the fourth time MSU has stolen as many bases in a game and the first time since steals six against Northeastern State on March 20, 2011.
  • Junior right fielder Courtney Bingham became the 10th player to launch two home runs in a single game in Saturday's opener against Incarnate Word and the second this season as Kim Jerrick had two homers at Henderson State (Ark.) on Feb. 5.
  • Midwestern drew 10 walks against Incarnate Word ace Briana Sanchez which are the second most in program history. The Mustangs walked 11 times at West Texas A&M on April 3, 2007.
