GAME DAY: Mustangs meet Texas Woman's in key LSC tilt

Midwestern State makes the short trip to Denton to face the Texas Woman's Pioneers in an important Lone Star Conference matchup for the Mustangs.

MSU is 18-5 overall, 14-3 in LSC action after Monday's loss 66-61 to Tarleton State in Wichita Falls.  Texas Woman's dropped a 54-48 decision to Cameron on Wednesday night.

Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

Midwestern State is in second place in the Lone Star Conference race, two games behind Tarleton State and one game in front of West Texas A&M in third.  The Mustangs have won 14 of their last 16 games, with the two losses coming to TSU.  They have secured no lower than a top three berth to the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Allen, their first tournament appearance since 2003.

MSU boasts a pair of double-figure scorers this season led by senior guard Savannah Carver, a two-time LSC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Amarillo native ranks thid in the LSC with 15.7 points per game while connecting on 1.7 3-pointers a contest.

Sophomore guard Kirsti Degelia scores 11.8 points a contest, while shooting 44.9 percent from the floor and adding 4.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

Freshman Dianna Jones tallies 9.2 points a game for the Mustangs.  She is connecting on a just under 1.0 treys an outing and was the leader Lone Star Conference in 3-point percentage, nailing 48.8 percent (20-41), but has dipped below 1.000 makes a game. The Waco Midway High product pitches in 1.6 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game.

Senior forward Cierra Thompson adds 8.6 points and 6.1 rebounds.

Senior forward Jazman Patterson, LSC Defensive Player of the Week on Jan. 24, adds 6.0 rebounds a game to go with her 7.0 points and 47.5 percent shooting from the floor.

MSU leads the Lone Star Conference averaging 74.5 points and is second in the league with 41.4 rebounds a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 66.2 points a contest.

ABOUT THE PIONEERS

Texas Woman's enters the game with a 12-11 overall record, 7-10 in Lone Star Conference play..  The Pioneers are in sixth in the Lone Star Conference race, two games behind Angelo State in fifth and one game ahead of a three-way tie for seventh.

Jessica Hanna leads the team by averaging 14.3 points and 7.6 rebounds a contest.  The 5-9 senior also adds 2.0 assists and 1.6 steals an outing while shooting 44.0 percent from the floor.

Brittney Nuzum collects 13.7 points a game.  The 5-9 junior connects on 2.5 3-pointers while shooting 38.9 percent from the arc.

Raquel Cuffie is averaging 9.2 points a contest.  The 5-10 junior pulls in 6.2 rebounds an outing to go with her 1.5 steals and 1.3 assists a game, while shooting 41.6 percent from the floor. 

Cambria Smith is the go through person at guard, dishing out 7.4 assists while scoring 6.7 points with 2.1 steals a game.

TWU is averaging 62.9 points a game, while allowing the opposition 60.4 a contest.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State meets up with Texas Woman's for the 49th time on Saturday when they square off at Kitty Magee Arena.

MSU holds a 30-18 series lead against the Pioneers that started in the 1975-76 season. MSU holds a 14-6 record in Denton and a 7-4 advantage at Magee Arena. MSU has a 13-8 lead at Ligon Coliseum and a 3-4 record in unknown sites.

MSU has won the last three meetings with Texas Woman's including the Mustangs 74-67 win on Jan. 7 in Wichita Falls, after TWU had taken four straight. MSU started the string with an 80-78 victory on Jan. 9, 2010.

TWU's last win in the series was a 63-60 win in Wichita Falls on Dec. 20, 2008.
