GAME DAY: Mustangs ready for second shot against Tarleton State

Midwestern State returns home to D.L. Ligon Coliseum for a Lone Star Conference first-place showdown with the Tarleton State TexAnns on Monday night. A win by MSU ties the league race with three games left for the Mustangs.

MSU is 18-4 overall, 14-2 in LSC action after Saturday's 86-64 win at Texas A&M-Kingsville.  Tarleton State stands at 17-6 overall and 14-1 to lead the LSC.  The TexAnns were idle Saturday after falling 55-48 to Texas Woman's in Denton last Wednesday.

Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Delayed Telecast - Wednesday night's game air via delayed telecast via Time Warner Sports. The game will air twice on The Texas Channel (Time Warner Digital Channel 888), the first on Wednesday, Feb. 15th about 9 p.m. following the MSU men's game at 7 p.m. that night, and again on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 9 p.m.  The game will also be seen on Time Warner's Wichita Falls Channel 15 on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

Midwestern State remained a game behind Tarleton in the LSC standings by handing Texas A&M-Kingsville its worst loss ever to MSU in the 22-point 86-64 win.  The Mustangs have won 14 of their last 15 games and 17 of the last 19 games to go with a four-game winning streak.  They secured no lower than a top three berth to the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Allen, their first tournament appearance since 2003.

MSU boasts a pair of double-figure scorers this season led by senior guard Savannah Carver, the LSC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Amarillo native ranks thid in the LSC with 15.9 points per game while connecting on 1.7 3-pointers a contest.

Sophomore guard Kirsti Degelia scores 11.8 points a contest, while shooting 44.7 percent from the floor and adding 4.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

Freshman Dianna Jones tallies 9.5 points a game for the Mustangs.  She is connecting on a 1.0 treys an outing and leads the Lone Star Conference in 3-point percentage by nailing 48.8 percent (20-41). The Waco Midway High product pitches in 1.6 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.

Senior forward Cierra Thompson adds 8.7 points and 56.0 rebounds.

Senior forward Jazman Patterson, LSC Defensive Player of the Week on Jan. 24, adds 6.1 rebounds a game to go with her 6.9 points and 47.0 percent shooting from the floor.

MSU leads the Lone Star Conference averaging 75.1 points and is second in the league with 41.9 rebounds a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 66.2 points a contest.

ABOUT THE TEXANNS

Tarleton State enters the game with a 17-6 overall record, leading the Lone Star Conference with a 14-1 mark.  The TexAnns had their 15-game winning streak broken last Wednesday at Texas Women's with the 55-48 loss.

Tarleton is paced by the Adamson sisters.  Shelby leads the team by averaging 13.9 points a contest.  The 5-7 senior also adds 4.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.9 steals an outing.

Peyton collects 13.7 points a game.  The 5-7 sophomore connects on 2.7 3-pointers while shooting 40.9 percent from the arc and leads NCAA Division II by hitting 93.0 percent of her free throws (66-71).

Kiara Wright is averaging 13.3 points a contest for the TexAnns in 13 games.  The 6-1 sophomore leads the team with 8.9 rebounds an outing to go with her 1.2 blocked shots, 1.8 steals and 2.0 assists a game, while shooting 64.4 percent from the floor. 

Shanae Lowrance adds 8.5 points with 5.6 boards an outing with 17 blocked shots this season.

Tarleton is averaging 72.9 points a game, while allowing the opposition 63.8 a contest.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State faces Tarleton State for the 56th time on the hardwood Monday night when they meet at Ligon Coliseum.

MSU holds a 29-26 series against the TexAnns that started in the 1976-77 season. MSU holds a 16-9 record at Ligon Coliseum, while TSU has a 14-12 record in Stephenville and a 1-3 record in unrecorded sites.

While the overall series is tilted MSU's way, it's been Tarleton winning lately. The TexAnns have claimed the last 13 meeting following an eight-game Midwestern win streak.

Tarleton beat MSU 77-62 in Stephenville on Jan. 28, and won the last meeting in Wichita Falls 67-59 on Feb. 21, 2011.

MSU's last win in the series was a double overtime 80-74 win in Wichita Falls on Jan. 5, 2005.
