GAME DAY: Mustangs go south seeking fourth straight win

Midwestern State is out for a four-game winning streak and a sweep in the season series when they visit the Gulf Coast on Saturday afternoon to face Texas A&M-Kingsville.

MSU is 17-4 overall, 13-2 in LSC action after Wednesday's 76-65 win over Incarnate Word in Wichita Falls.  Texas A&M-Kingsville stands at 7-15 overall, 6-10 in the LSC after beating Cameron 86-65 on Thursday for their third straight victory

Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Steinke Center/Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

Midwestern State swept the regular season series from Incarnate Word with a 76-65 win on Wednesday.  The Mustangs have won 16 of the last 18 games and 13 of their last 14 contests.  They have also earned a berth to the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Allen, their first tournament appearance since 2003.

MSU boasts a pair of double-figure scorers this season led by senior guard Savannah Carver, the LSC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Amarillo native ranks thid in the LSC with 16.1 points per game while connecting on 1.8 3-pointers a contest.

Sophomore guard Kirsti Degelia scores 11.6 points a contest, while shooting 44.9 percent from the floor and adds 4.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

Freshman Dianna Jones tallies 9.1 points a game for the Mustangs.  She is connecting on a 1.0 treys an outing and leads the Lone Star Conference in 3-point percentage by nailing 47.5 percent (19-40). The Waco Midway High product pitches in 1.7 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.

Senior forward Cierra Thompson adds 9.0 points and 6.0 rebounds.

Senior forward Jazman Patterson, LSC Defensive Player of the Week on Jan. 24, adds 6.2 rebounds a game to go with her 6.6 points and 45.0 percent shooting from the floor.

MSU leads the Lone Star Conference averaging 74.6 points and is second in the league with 41.7 rebounds a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 66.3 points a contest.

ABOUT THE JAVELINAS

Texas A&M-Kingsville enters the game with an 7-15 overall record and a 6-10 Lone Star Conference mark.  The Javelinas have won three straight and five of their last seven with Thursday's 86-65 win over Cameron in Kingsville.

TAMUK is paced by Jackie Standley who averages 11.7 points a contest.  The 6-2 senior, who is a graduate of Rice and was the Javelinas graduate assistant coach until Dec. 17, also leads the team with 9.5 rebounds in 13 games played.

Amanda Haven collects 11.3 points a game.  The 5-8 senior connects on 1.4 3-pointers while adding 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals a game.

Inekka Stevenson is averaging 11.2 points a contest for the Javelinas.  The 5-8 junior contributes 7.5 rebounds with 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals. 

Shonta Dobbins chips in 8.3 points with 5.4 boards a game, along with 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals.

The Javelinas are averaging 66.0 points a game, while allowing the opposition 76.0 a contest.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State faces Texas A&M-Kingsville for the 33rd time on the hardwood Saturday afternoon when they meet at the Steinke Center.

MSU holds a 17-15 series lead over A&M-Kingsville, however the Javelinas have a 9-7 advantage in games played in Kingsville. The Mustangs hold a 10-6 series advantage in games played at Ligon Coliseum.

MSU has won the last two games in the series, including an 86-70 win over the Javelinas on Dec. 17 in Wichita Falls. The two wins snapped a six-game MSU losing streak to the Hoggies.

The last time MSU defeated TAMUK at the Steinke Center was on Feb. 15, 2006 when the newly named Mustangs took a 69-59 win over the Javelinas.
