Setting the Stage

Midwestern State is fighting for its postseason life Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum against No. 19 Tarleton State.

The Mustangs must defeat the TexAnns and root for Tarleton to win at least once against Abilene Christian or Angelo State to allow the Mustangs to work into a tie for either third or fourth place to earn their first berth in the LSC Championships since 2003.

A loss would eliminate MSU.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

About the Mustangs

Midwestern State's postseason hopes are still alive but in order to make the postseason, the Mustangs need to do something they have done in a while - beat Tarleton State.

MSU last beat the TexAnns in Jan. 2005 and have dropped the last 11 games against Tarleton including an 88-57 loss earlier this month in Stephenville.

But a win could be the key that opens the postseason door.

If Midwestern wins out and Tarleton defeats Abilene Christian and Angelo State this week, the Mustangs could go in as the No. 4 seed as the teams would be knotted in a three-way tie for third place with matching 8-6 marks.

In another scenario, if Midwestern wins out and Tarleton defeats either ACU or Angelo State, then the Mustangs would still go in as the No. 4 seed as they would have split the season series with either team and own the tiebreaker with a win over the TexAnns.

Junior forward Jazman Patterson paced the Mustangs with 12 points and six rebounds earlier this month in Stephenville as MSU struggled to a 32.1 percent shooting night.

The Mustangs had a three-game winning streak snapped Saturday night at West Texas A&M.

About the TexAnns

Tarleton State has rattled off 11-straight wins and clinched a Lone Star Conference South Division title Saturday night at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The TexAnns (21-2, 11-0) can complete a sweep through division play with wins at Midwestern State, Abilene Christian and Angelo State this week.

Tarleton is paced by junior guard Shelby Adamson who scored 16.4 points a game while shooting 47.9 percent from the field. The Rockwall native has knack for getting to the free throw line as she averages 8.9 charity tosses per game. Adamson also pulls down 4.0 rebounds a contest and dishes out 3.9 assists a game.

Junior forward Morgan Stehling, who poured in 17 points in 16 minutes off of the bench earlier this month against MSU, adds 10.1 points a game while senior center Brittnie Haley (9.0 points, 4.5 rebounds), senior center Kelsey Benford (7.8 points, 6.2 rebounds), freshman center Kiara Wright (7.7 points, 7.4 rebounds), senior guard Sonya Sundberg (6.8 points, 3.7 assists) and junior guard Tara Towns (5.9 points, 2.1 rebounds) fill out a balance Tarleton attack.

The TexAnns score 74.2 points a game an allow 59.0.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Tarleton State meet for the 54th time on the hardwood Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs cling to a 29-24 edge in the series that dates back to the 1975-76 season, but the TexAnns have won the last 11 games including an 88-57 win earlier this month in Stephenville.

MSU's last win of the series came by an 80-74 count in overtime on Jan. 6, 2005 when Katherine Maples poured in 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Adrian Fincher narrowly missed out on a triple-double with 19 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs won a 16-8 advantage all time in games played under the dome, but Tarleton has won in its last five trips to Wichita Falls.
