Game Day: Mustangs out for revenge tonight against No. 21 Incarnate Word

Setting the Stage

One thing has been as certain as rain in a hurricane when Midwestern State and Incarnate Word square off in the regular season - overtime.

Regulation hasn't been enough to decide the last six regular season meetings between the teams as the Mustangs and Cardinals battled to double overtime last month in San Antonio before then-No. 9 UIW survived 90-83.

The Mustangs had won three of the previous five overtime games before ending the Cardinals' previous two seasons (2009 and 2010) in the NCAA II South Central Regionals - both of those in regulation.

Tipoff for Saturday night's Lone Star Conference South Division showdown is set for 7 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

About the Mustangs

Chris Hagan appears to have recovered from a foot injury suffered against Incarnate Word last month in San Antonio.

Well, at least Eastern New Mexico will attest to that, as the senior guard from Houston erupted for 33 points on 10-of-17 shooting including five treys to lead Midwestern State to an 81-79 win Wednesday night in Portales.

It was Hagan's third 30-point performance of the season and his highest output since pouring in a school record 50 points on Dec. 13 at Cameron.

It was also his fourth 30-point outing at MSU and all of them have come away from D.L. Ligon Coliseum where the Mustangs will be going for their 40th consecutive home win tonight.

The outing allowed Hagan to regain the LSC scoring lead as he upped his season average to 22.2 points per game and holds a 0.3-point lead over Central Oklahoma Dauntae Williams (21.9 points per game).

Hagan hasn't been getting plenty of inside help lately as junior forward David Terrell and Darrick Thomas are coming on strong.

Terrell, a transfer from Midland College, has scored in double figures in each of his last three outings including a season-best 18-point, 10-rebound effort Wednesday night at ENMU to boost his LSC South averages to 10 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting an LSC-best 70.9 percent from the field during league play.

Thomas, a transfer from Wallace State-Hanceville, has scored in double figures in four of his last six games and is averaging a strong 9.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in just 21.6 minutes per game.

Midwestern State is coming off of a stretch of playing seven of 10 games on the road and will play four of its next five games under the dome at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

About the Cardinals

No. 21 Incarnate Word comes into D.L. Ligon Coliseum in desperate need of a win.

The Cardinals (15-5, 4-4) have lost their last three games and have struggled to a 4-4 record away from McDermott Center this season.

UIW relies heavily on its starters as each of them average double figures.

Senior forward Tracy Robinson leads the way with 16.8 points and 7.6 rebounds a game, while MSU killer Eric Stewart averages 11.3 points a contest.

Stewart, a 6-2 senior guard, connected on 4-of-5 from the arc to help the Cardinals to a 90-83 double OT win over the Mustangs on Jan. 22 and finished with a game-high 23 points. He has hit just 5-of-32 shots (.156) the rest of the season from beyond the arc.

Sophomore guard Kelcey Solomon (11.2 points, 4.0 rebounds), junior forward Chris Johnson (10.9 points, 6.5 rebounds) and junior guard Shaun Umeh (10.7 points, 3.7 rebounds) round out the Cardinals' starting tandem.

Just two other players have appeared in half of UIW's games for better than a 10-minute average per game as junior forward Jordan Roddy scores 6.8 points a game and senior guard Deleon Hines averages 6.7 points.

Incarnate Word scores 74.7 points a game and allows 68.7.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Incarnate Word meet for the 20th time on the hardwood Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Cardinals own an 11-8 edge in the series that dates back to the 1991-92 season and snapped MSU's four-game winning streak with a 90-83 double overtime in on Jan. 22 in San Antonio.

It was the sixth straight regular season game between the teams decided in overtime as the teams have split those contests.

Incarnate Word is one of just three teams to play more than three games at Ligon Coliseum to own a winning record as the Cardinals have won in six of their nine trips to Wichita Falls.

However, MSU thumped the Cardinals in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Central Regionals 91-74 last March at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. It was the second straight season the Mustangs ended UIW's season which also including an 80-72 win in the 2010 South Central Regionals in Warrensburg, Mo.
