Midwestern deals Cards fourth straight loss, 81-71

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State showed No. 21 Incarnate Word a real home court edge Saturday night as the Mustangs rolled to their 40th straight win at D.L. Ligon Coliseum taking an 81-71 Lone Star Conference South Division win.

The Mustangs didn't need overtime to send the Cardinals to a fourth-straight loss and avenged a 90-83 double overtime setback last month in San Antonio. The game snapped a six-game run over overtime contests dating back to the 2002-03 season.

Midwestern's backcourt combination of Michael Loyd and Chris Hagan proved devastating for the Cardinals.

Loyd delivered his best shooting night of the season as banged in five 3-pointers on 9-of-14 shooting from the field to tally a season-high 25 points in just 23 minutes of court time to lead the way for the Mustangs.

Hagan was just as efficient as the senior All American hit on 7-of-9 shots from within the arc on has way to a great all-around performance as finished with 22 points, six rebounds, seven assists and four steals in 33 minutes.

Midwestern used a 12-3 late in the second half to surge to a 32-20 lead on Loyd's second trey of the half with 5:33 to play until overtime.

But the Cardinals chipped away and eventually took a short lived 48-46 lead after Kelcey Solomon converted a pair of free throws with 11:57 to play.

Then Midwestern used a late 13-3 spurt fueled by seven points by Loyd and a pair of David Terrell dunks to take a commanding 78-63 lead with 2:33 to play.

With the win, MSU moves into sole possession of second place in the LSC South, but are just a half-game ahead of Angelo State and West Texas A&M.

Terrell tallied at least 10 points in his fourth consecutive game as the junior transfer forward from Midland College finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks while Darrick Thomas had four points to go along with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Chris Johnson led a pack four players in double figures for Incarnate Word with 18 points while Shaun Umeh had 17, Eric Stewart had 14 and Solomon pitched in 10.

Midwestern State takes on Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game which begins at 6.

Incarnate Word fell to 15-6 and 4-5.
