DeJuan Plummer splashed in 16 points off of the bench to lead Midwestern State Saturday night at Marriott Center, but the Mustangs fell to NCAA Division I power Brigham Young 91-74 in exhibition play Saturday night.
Playing without front line starters
Darrick Thomas and
Thomas Colbert, MSU struggled with the Cougars strong inside presence early on as BYU controlled the glass 57-37.
The Cougars' starting front line of Brandon Davies, Stephen Rogers and Noah Hartsock combined for 41 points as BYU controlled a 40-16 edge in points in the paint. Starting point guard Charles Abouo poured in 14 points.
The Mustangs trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half as the Cougars pulled away in the second half and by as many as 26 whn Chris Collinsworth completed a traditional three-point play to give BYU a 76-50 lead with 10:17 to play.
MSU freshman
Derrell Gibbs scored four points to key a 10-3 Mustangs' run late in the second half to pull tem to within 87-74 on a pair of free throws with 1:39 to play, but that's as close as it would get.
Senior forward
David Terrell added 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots off of the bench, while
Michael Loyd and
JaMichael Rivers with 13 and 11 points each.
Midwestern State concludes its exhibition on Monday, Nov. 7 against Paul Quinn (Texas) at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Mustangs open the regular season the following Friday against Mid-America Christian (Okla.).
