Game Day: 15th ranked Mustangs visit Angelo State

The No. 15 Midwestern State Mustangs take their unbeaten record to San Angelo to face the Angelo State Rams.

The Mustangs are 5-0, 4-0 in the Lone Star Conference after trouncing Tarleton State 44-13 last Saturday at Memorial Stadium.  The Mustangs are ranked 15th this week in the AFCA Division II Football Poll.

Angelo State sports a 3-3 season record, 0-3 in Lone Star Conference play after dropping a tight 19-7 decision to No. 20 West Texas A&M in Canyon last Saturday night.

Midwestern State took awhile to acclimate to the torrential rain last Saturday before coming on strong against the Texans.

MSU continued it powerful ground game as the "New Pony Express" rolled up 308 yards against Tarleton, marking the fourth consecutive game the Mustangs collected 290 or more rushing yards.

Redshirt freshman Jimmy Pipkin earned Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after coming off the bench in the second quarter to rush for 155 yards on 14 carries.  He broke the second longest run of the season and fifth longest in MSU history with an 83-yard touchdown.  A few weeks ago, he led all rushers at the Lone Star Football Festival with 106 yards and broke an 87-yard touchdown run (fourth longest in MSU history) in the waning seconds of the contest for MSU against Texas A&M-Commerce.  He's third in the LSC and 65th nationally with a 75.0 yard average.

Junior quarterback Brandon Kelsey continues with his outstanding play.  Kelsey threw for 142 yards against the Texans, hitting 14-of-19 with a touchdown, and he rushed for 56 yards including a 33-yard touchdown run.  He's leading the LSC and is fifth nationally in pass efficiency with a 167.24 rating by completing 68-of-96 passes for 922 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions.  He's also sixth in rushing in the league (and 83rd in Division II) with 67.6 yards a game and four touchdowns. 

Sophomore Keidrick Jackson, the D2Football.com National Offensive Player of the Week and the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week against Texas A&M-Kingsville, sloshed for 53 yards on 15 carries against Tarleton.  He's fourth in the Lone Star Conference and is 66th nationally in rushing with 74.8 yards a game, and leads the LSC and is third nationally in scoring averaging 13.2 points a contest. 

Senior Lester Bush picked up 43 rushing yards against TSU.  He's second on the team, fifth in the LSC and 79th nationally with an average of 69.2 yards a game on the ground.

Senior David Little hauled in another seven reception game, despite the rain.  He chalked up seven grabs for 65 yards and a touchdown.  He has 27 catches for 393 yards on the season (14.6 yards per reception).  He's moved into second in career receptions and yardage with 138 grabs for 1,869 yards.  He is second in touchdown receptions with 18.

Senior linebacker Ty Duncan, the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week after the Missouri S&T game, continues to lead the tackle chart with 37 stops.

Sophomore Neiko Conway has two pass interceptions to lead the team this season, with a total of five in his 13 career games at MSU.

The MSU defense leads the LSC and is 33rd nationally by allowing 309.6 total yards a game.  MSU is also second in the LSC and 14th nationally in scoring defense at 16.4 points given up a contest.

Angelo State is keyed offensively by sophomore Blake Hamblin at quarterback.  Hamblin has thrown for 1,443 yards, completing 118-of-198 passes with nine touchdowns and threee interceptions.

ASU is averaging 24.8 points and 398.3 total yards a contest.

Defensively, the Rams are giving up 339.2 yards and 21.2 points a game.

Junior defensive back Alvin Johnson leads the Rams tackle chart with 41 stops in six games (6.8 per game).

Senior Lawrence Rumph, a transfer from Texas Tech, has 26 tackles on the year and leads the LSC and is 23rd nationally with 9.5 tackles for losses (-47) and is second in the league and seventh nationally in quarterback sacks with 6.5 (-41).

About the Series

Midwestern State and Angelo State are meeting for the 14th time, including a contest when both were junior colleges, when they meet at San Angelo Stadium.  MSU holds an 8-5 series advantage, however the Rams have taken two of the last three games in San Angelo.  MSU won last year's meeting 35-21 in Wichita Falls. 

Quick Hits

  • The Mustangs moved up in the AFCA Top 25 this week at No. 15.  MSU was 18th last week.  The D2Football.com media poll has the Mustangs at No. 16.
  • Midwestern State has scored on all 25 of it's appearances in the red zone this season, scoring 23 touchdowns and two field goals. 
  • MSU is seeking to tie the 1949 team that started their campaign with a 6-0 start.
