Game Day: Midwestern closes out crossover slate today at Central Oklahoma

Setting the Stage

Midwestern State is still in search of its first win away from D.L. Ligon Coliseum Saturday afternoon when the Mustangs take on Central Oklahoma at Hamilton Fieldhouse.

The Mustangs have suffered consecutive crushing losses after forcing No. 7 Northeastern State to convert two buzzer beaters before falling dropping a second-straight decision after holding a lead late in the contest.

Tipoff is in Edmond is set for 2 p.m.

About the Mustangs

Seniors Katiya Jackson and Nolisha Markham delivered career performances while helping Midwestern State push No. 7 Northeastern State to two overtime periods Thursday night in Tahlequah.

Jackson poured in a career-high 23 points on 8-of-16 shootings including a pair of clutch treys in the second overtime while connecting on each of her five charity tosses.

The Burkburnett High product added six rebounds, four assists and three steals in 43 minutes.

Jackson has responded favorably since she was inserted into the starting lineup against Texas Woman's University on Dec. 18.

In the four games since, she has averaged 15 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.0 steals in 33 minutes per contest which has included her first LSC South Division Defensive Player of the Week recognition.

Markham matched a career-high with 22 points and pulled in eight rebounds in 38 minutes. The 5-10 forward worked the RiverHawks to the tune of 14 trips to the free throw line while making 12.
Markham, who was coming off of a 19-point, eight-rebound performance against Newman (Kan.), also scored 22 points at No. 21 Arkansas Tech on Dec. 30, 2009.

About the Bronchos

Central Oklahoma has dropped four of its last five games after winning five-straight from Nov. 20-Dec. 11.

The struggles have continued on the home floor where the Bronchos have dropped three consecutive games to Abilene Christian (87-71), Arkansas-Fort Smith (80-71) and Tarleton State (86-74).

UCO is led by senior forward Ashley Beckley who pours in 20.3 points per contest while pounding the paint with 51-percent shooting from the field. She also pulls in 8.2 rebounds.

Junior forward Alyssa Fuxa adds 15.1 points a game while pulling down 6.3 rebounds.

Junior guard Courtney Allen (9.4 points, 3.2 rebounds) and freshman guard Britney Morgan (8.7 points, 2.0 rebounds) have combined to hit 45 3-pointers as the Bronchos' top outside threats.

Central Oklahoma is 4-3 in LSC crossover contests.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Central Oklahoma meet for the 35th time on the hardwood Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Fieldhouse.

The series is knotted at 17-17, but the Bronchos have claimed wins in each of the last three meetings including a 78-69 win last season on Dec. 3, 2009 in Wichita Falls.

UCO is 8-5 all time against the Mustangs in games played in Edmond.

MSU last victory in the series came by a 61-54 count on Jan. 14, 2006 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs last win in Edmond was a 76-72 result on Jan. 9, 2003.
