Game Day: Midwestern faces tough challenge at No. 7 Northeastern State

Setting the Stage

Midwestern State takes on No. 7 Northeastern State in a Lone Star Conference crossover contest Thursday night at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse.

The Mustangs are in search of their first road win of 2010-11 and their first victory over a ranked opponent since beating No. 19 Angelo State 71-70 on Feb. 19, 2004 as MSU has lost its last 21 against teams ranked in the USA Today/WBCA Top 25.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

About the Mustangs

Midwestern State let a 12-point second-half lead get away in Monday night's 73-71 loss to Newman (Kan.) at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The loss snapped a modest two-game winning streak as the Mustangs fell to 4-6 on the season.

MSU is 3-3 in LSC crossover contests this season.

Senior forward Nolisha Markham poured in 19 points and snatched eight rebounds to lead MSU in Monday night's loss and has now scored 10-or-more points in five of her last six contests.

She is second on the team in scoring during the stretch while averaging 12.5 points and 6.8 rebounds a game while shooting 51 percent from the field (26 of 51).

Senior guard Katiya Jackson has come on strong since being inserted into the starting lineup over the last three games.

The Burkburnett High product narrowly missed consecutive double-doubles with 16 points and 12 rebounds against Texas A&M-Commerce followed by a 13-point, 9-rebound effort versus Newman (Kan.).

Jackson is averaging 12.3 points and 8.3 rebounds a contest over 29.7 minutes a game as a starter.

Senior forward Savannah Carver continues to lead a solid quartet of double-digit scorers for Midwestern. The Canyon native averages 14.4 points a game followed by Cierra Thompson (12.7 points, 4.1 rebounds), Kirsti Degelia (12.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists) and Markham (10.4 points, 6.0 rebounds).

About the RiverHawks

Northeastern State suffered its first loss of the season falling to NCAA Division I Oral Roberts 83-57 Monday night in Tulsa.

The RiverHawks (9-1) had won their first nine games of the season which road wins over traditional powers Drury (Mo.) and West Texas A&M.

NSU has played just nine girls this season and is led by sophomore guard Taylor Lewis who leads the RiverHawks' motion attack averaging 13.5 points and 3.5 rebounds.

Lewis receives plenty of inside help from senior forward Jasmine Webb, who averages 13.2 points and 8.4 rebounds a contest.

Junior point guard Jasmine Wright adds 9.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists per contest while fellow starters sophomore guard Tosha Tyler (8.4 ponts, 3.9 rebounds) and junior forward Cristy Nitz (7.7 points, 4.7 rebounds) also make significant contributions for the RiverHawks.

Each of Northeastern State's five starters average at least 26.8 minutes a game.

Freshman guard Katy Harsen (4.1 points, 3.5 rebounds) and sophomore forward Sarah Green (4.0 points, 3.2 rebounds) are NSU's top options off of the bench.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Northeastern State meet for the 17th time on the hardwood Thursday night at Dobbins Fieldhouse.

The RiverHawks own a 9-7 edge in the series and have won each of the last four meetings between the programs and eight of the last nine.

The Mustangs' lone win since 2003 came by a 63-59 count on Jan. 12, 2006 in Wichita Falls.

Northeastern State is 6-2 against MSU in games played at Dobbins Fieldhouse and has claimed victories in the last five dating back to Midwestern's 64-59 victory on Feb. 21, 2002 when the Mustangs were a member of the LSC North.
