Game Day: Mustangs hit the road to face Incarnate Word

Setting the Stage

Midwestern State is in search of its first road win of the season Saturday when the Mustangs take on Incarnate Word in a Lone Star Conference South Division battle at McDermott Center.
 
Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

About the Mustangs

Midwestern State's one-two inside punch of Nolisha Markham and Cierra Thompson combined 40 points as the Mustangs snapped a five-game skid with a 74-62 in over Eastern New Mexico Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
MSU used a 12-2 run late in the second half to bury the Zias then put away the game by making eight consecutive free throws over the final 1:26 to improve to 5-10 on the season and 1-2 in LSC South Division play.
 
Markham continued her torrid stretch by delivering her third straight game with at least 20 points. The Tulsa native dropped in a game-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with six rebounds.
 
Over her last six games, Markham is averaging 21 points and 8.3 rebounds a game while shooting 51.2 percent from the field (42-of-82) connecting on 9-of-15 from the arc (60 percent).
 
Thompson poured in 12 of her 19 points in the first half on a near perfect night from the field. The Llano product was 6-of-8 from the field including a 3-pointer and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe while pulling down five rebounds.
 
Senior guard Katiya Jacksonrolled up her third straight double figure outing with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field while dishing out a career high seven assists to go along with three steals and a block.
 
The Burkburnett High grad has come on strong since moving into the starting lineup eight games ago. Jackson is averaging 13.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest over the stretch.

About the Cardinals

Incarnate Word (5-10, 1-2) has dropped three of its last four since peeling off four-straight wins coming out of the Christmas Break.
 
The Cardinals split a pair of games last week rolling to a 64-47 win Wednesday night at Texas A&M-Kingsville then was crushed 81-51 Saturday night at Tarleton State.
 
Junior Chloe Wallace leads UIW in scoring at 11.3 points a game. The 5-11 forward has paced the balanced Cardinals in scoring just three times this season while pulling down 6.5 rebounds a game.
 
Sophomore point guard Katy Cooke drops in 10.3 points while dishing out 3.9 assists per game, while freshman guard Ifunanya Mora adds 10 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds a game.
 
Ten different players have started for the Cardinals as 10 players average at least 10 minutes a contest.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Incarnate Word meet for the 15th time on the hardwood Saturday afternoon at McDermott Center.
 
The Mustangs own a commanding 10-4 edge in the series that dates back to the 1990-91 season and includes a pair of MSU forfeits.
 
Midwestern has won the last four games of the series and 10 of the last 12 including a 67-66 upset of last season's Heartland Conference champions in the 2009-10 season finale on Feb. 27, 2010 in San Antonio.
 
MSU is 2-2 all time against the Cardinals in McDermott Center with UIW's last victory of the series coming by a count of 77-74 on Dec. 30, 2005 on its home floor.
