Game Day: #23 Mustangs look to get back on track tonight against ACU

Setting the Stage

Streaks have generally been associated with winning at Midwestern State over the past three seasons.

Now, the Mustangs must extinguish a rare skid as the MSU has lost consecutive games for the first time since dropping three straight contests from Nov. 25-Dec. 15, 2008 after falling to Central Oklahoma and Angelo State.

MSU can even its Lone Star Conference South Division record at 1-1 Saturday night when it returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum against Abilene Christian. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Mustangs have won 36 consecutive games on their home floor under the dome.

About the Mustangs

Senior Chris Hagan delivered his third career 30-point outing in Wednesday night's 82-81 loss at Angelo State.

Ironically, the Mustangs have won just one of those games as the 5-9 senior guard poured in 31 points in MSU's NCAA Divison II Elite Eight loss to St. Cloud State last March in Springfield, Mass. and scored 34 points Wednesday night at Junell Center.

Hagan did pace the Mustangs to a 91-82 victory on Dec. 13 at Cameron when he erupted for a school-record 50 points against the Aggies.

Hagan ranks fifth in NCAA Division II and leads the Lone Star Conference in scoring at 24.3 points a game and scored 20-or-more points 10 times this season.

Midwestern State (12-3, 0-1) has now lost consecutive for the first time since dropping three straight during the 2007-08 season.

According to coach Grant McCasland, it's hardly the time to worry. Each of his two national finalists teams at Midland College loss consecutive games during the regular season.

About the Wildcats

Abilene Christian has struggled in its six games away from Moody Coliseum this season.

The Wildcats (8-5, 0-1) are 2-4 away from their home court, but has claimed wins at Northeastern State and Cameron.

ACU suffered its first home loss in Tuesday night's Lone Star Conference South Division opener against Tarleton State by a margin of 64-45.

The Wildcats are led by junior guard Zach Williams who averages 11.0 points and 2.9 rebounds a game and is joined in double figures by junior guard Desmond Woodberry who scores 10.2 points and 3.9 rebounds a game.

Senior forward Giordan Cole (9.2 points, 5.2 rebounds) and senior guard Preston Davis (8.8 points, 1.8 rebounds) are the Wildcats' other top scoring options while 2009-10 LSC Freshman of the Year Dosh Simms notches 7.4 points and 5.3 rebounds a contest.

Abilene Christian scores 72 points a game and allows 73.3.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Abilene Christian meet for the 78th time on the hardwood Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs own a 48-29 edge in the series which dates back to 1947.

MSU has won the last four games in the series and 11 of the last 12.

Midwestern has been dominant over the Wildcats at D.L. Ligon Coliseum where it has been victorious in the last six meetings and is 17-5 versus ACU all time in the historic venue.

ACU's last win came by an 82-81 margin on a tip-in, three-point-play by Tucker Pierson on Jan. 22, 2004. It was the Wildcats second-straight win under the dome.
