Craig, Murphy named LSC Scholars

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State seniors Lauren Craig and Tyler Murphy joined 27 other student-athletes representing each of the 15 Lone Star Conference institutions to be named LSC Scholar Athletes Wednesday afternoon.

Craig, a senior from Frisco, became the first player in league softball history to earn top academic honors and player of the year accolades after leading the Mustangs to a conference record 54 wins and a trip to the NCAA Division II South Central Regionals.

The catcher was presented The Marie Morgan Award as MSU's most outstanding female athlete earlier this spring and became the first player in program history to achieve first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All America honors.

She became the just the fourth player in MSU history to drive in 100 runs as she finished the 2010 campaign batting .348 with eight doubles, five homers and 49 RBIs.

Craig graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average as a psychology major.

Murphy, a senior midfielder from Winfield, B.C., enjoyed a solid playing career at Midwestern as he helped the Mustangs to four consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II postseason including the school's first Final Four appearances in 2007.

The two-time Southwest Soccer Conference Academic Player of the Year played in 70 matches during his career and accounted for six goals and eight assists.

Murphy, the 2010 male recipient of MSU Marie Morgan Award, carried a 3.98 grade-point average as a biology major and chemistry minor.

Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and one female student-athlete at each member institution. These student-athletes are selected as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics scholarship and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the year.

To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and must have exhausted athletic eligibility.
