For the record
Midwestern State snapped a 10-game skid by shocking Abilene Christian 64-61 Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
It was the Mustangs first win since taking an 80-78 win over Texas Woman's University back on Jan. 9 in Denton.
MSU can further muddle the race for the fourth and final LSC South Division berth in the Lone Star Conference Championships which will be played from March 3-7 in Bartlesville by defeating the Rambelles on Wednesday night.
Angelo State and Abilene Christian are tied for fourth in the South with matching 5-5 and split its season series.
If Midwestern defeats the Rambelles, it would most likely force Angelo State to face a must-win against Tarleton State Saturday night at Junell Center, but that's only if Abilene Christian were to fall to Eastern New Mexico Tuesday night.
The Wildcats, thanks to a win over West Texas A&M earlier this season, would clinch the berth with a win at ENMU combined with a win by the Mustangs over Angelo State.
Essentially, the Rambelles need to win both games this week and hope for an ACU loss, so a Midwestern win would prove disastrous.
Abilene Christian, by the way, ends the regular season at West Texas A&M on Saturday.
About the opponent
Angelo State snapped out of a modest two-game skid with a 69-57 win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at Junell Center.
But the Rambelles (12-12, 5-5), who have gone 4-1 in the LSC South Division at home, have not fared well outside of San Angelo where they have gone 1-4 during division play with their lone win coming in a 64-62 decision at Eastern New Mexico.
Angelo State survived a short-handed Midwestern squad 62-58 back on Jan. 13th at Junell Center.
The Rambelles are paced by two-time All-LSC South performer Camille Perkins.
The aggressive junior guard from Groesbeck scores 15.2 points a game while working her way to the charity stripe for an average of 6.6 times per contest.
Perkins pulls in 4.5 rebounds per game.
Sophomore center Paige Weishuhn gives Angelo State a potent inside-outside threat at 12.1 points per game.
The Wall native shoots 41.8 percent from the arc, while pulling in 4.8 rebounds a game. Weishuhn has recorded 30 blocked shots and 19 steals this season.
The Rambelles score 64 points a game as a team and allow 64.2.
Who's hot
Sophomore forward Savannah Carver looks for consistency after dropping a career-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists in Saturday night's win over Abilene Christian.
The Canyon Randall High product has scored in double figures in every other game over her last five outings.
Carver has paced the Mustangs during LSC South Division play with 10.4 points to go along with four rebounds a contest.
Junior forward Nolisha Markham, who is the reigning LSC South Defensive Player of the Week, sealed MSU's 64-61 win over Abilene Christian by blocking Jody Meyer's layup attempt with 14 seconds remaining Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Markham has shown consistency on the offensive end where she has scored in double figures in five of her last eight games.
About the series
Midwestern State meets Angelo State for the 48th time on the hardwood Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Rambelles own a slim 25-22 edge in the series and is 12-3 against the Mustangs since MSU returned to the LSC South for the 2002-03 season.
Midwestern is 17-7 all time against Angelo State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum and has won two of the last three on Gerald Stockton Court including a 79-77 win last season.
