Hagan, Loyd-led Mustangs wreck Rangers, 86-69

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's dynamic guard duo of Chris Hagan and Michael Loyd combined for 48 points to lift the 24th-ranked Mustangs to an 86-69 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The win extended MSU's current winning streak to eight games as the Mustangs improved to 8-1 on the season as their home court victorious run reached 34 straight contests.

Midwestern State continues its five-game home stand by playing to Texas A&M-Commerce Monday night at Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game which begins at 6.

Northwestern Oklahoma State took it to the Mustangs in the opening half as the teams exchanged the lead 16 times as the Rangers led 38-35 at the break.

Hagan, who was coming off of a school-record 50-point performance, poured in 18 of his game-high 28 points in the opening half.

That's when Loyd, a junior transfer from BYU, took over.

He hit his first field goal of the night on a pull-up from the free-throw line with 17:34 to play.

Loyd then canned back-to-back 3-pointers and followed with a fast break layup to complete a personal 10-0 run to turn a 44-40 deficit into a 50-44 advantage with 15:06 to play.

The Mustangs continued to roll hit three treys in 2 1/2 minutes to push the lead to 67-50 with his trey at the 8:04 mark.

The Rangers would cut the advantage back to nine, but MSU scored the final eight points of the game to close out NWOSU.

Loyd would finish with a season-high 20 points - all in the second half, while Nichols pitched in 13 and David Terrell added 12 points off of the bench.

Orren Tims, the reigning Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week, paced the Rangers with 21 points while Marshell Bell knocked down four treys to finish with 16.

Northwestern Oklahoma State fell to 8-3 on the season.
