Game Day: Mustangs play host to Southeastern Oklahoma Tuesday night at Ligon Coliseum

Setting the Stage

Midwestern State opens its final season of Lone Star Conference crossover play against Southeastern Oklahoma State Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
 
Remember to exchange a toy for a general a complimentary general admission ticket at the gate.
 
The Mustangs (1-2) shook off a rough start to blast Hillsdale Freewill Baptist 101-26 last Monday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
Southeastern Oklahoma (3-1) owns three double-figure wins this season with its lone loss coming to St. Mary's (Texas).

About the Mustangs

Freshman guard Kirsti Degelia has gotten her collegiate career off to a flying start as the Krum product leads Midwestern State with 16 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.3 steals a game.
 
The 5-8 guard poured in a season-high 20 points to go along with seven assists and seven steals in MSU's rout of Hillsdale Freewill Baptist.
 
But Degelia has done just fine against the better competition as well. She earned St. Edward's Shootout all-tournament honors after scoring 16 points with five steals against the host Hilltoppers before scoring 12 points - all in the first half - with five rebounds against Hillsdale College (Mich.).
 
Degelia is shooting 55.9 percent from the floor.
 
Junior forward Cierra Thompson has come on strong over her last two games including a 14-point, seven-rebound effort against Hillsdale (Mich.) before netting a career-high 21 points with three steals and three blocks against Hillsdale Freewill Baptist.
 
Thompson is average 13.7 points and four rebounds a game.
 
Junior forward Savannah Carver joins the duo in double figures at 10.3 points a game. The Amarillo native went for a season-high 16 points against Hillsdale Freewill Baptist.

About the Savage Storm

Southeastern Oklahoma State has sported a different leading scorer in each of its four games this season and eight players average more than five points a contest.
 
Junior Whitney Coffey leads the Savage Storm in both scoring (11.8 points per game) and rebounding (5.5 rebounds a game), but is joined by sophomore Bailey Welch (10 ppg) and senior Christin Nichols (10 ppg) with double figure scoring averages.
 
But it was junior point guard Nikki Nester who paced Southeastern to an 82-67 win over St. Edward's its last time out with 17 points and four assists while junior forward Jessica Hesse tallied 13 points and snagged seven rebounds off of the bench.
 
Southeastern Oklahoma scores 76.2 points a game and allows 67.

About the Series

Midwestern State meets Southeastern Oklahoma for the 25th time on the hardwood Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
The Savage Storm owns a 15-9 edge in the series and has won four of the last five meetings between the programs including a 73-61 victory on Dec. 12, 2009 last season in Durant.
 
The Mustangs defeated Southeastern Oklahoma 76-71 in the Savage Storm's last trip to Wichita Falls during the 2008-09 season.
 
MSU owns a 7-5 edge against Southeastern Oklahoma at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

  • Midwestern State's 75-point win was the third largest margin in program history and biggest since MSU routed Southwestern Assemblies of God 120-40 on Dec. 15, 1998.
     
  • The Mustangs limited Hillsdale Freewill Baptist to 26 total points which stands as the fewest points permitted in program history. MSU defeated Austin College 92-28 during the 1982-83 season.
 
  • Kirsti Degelia is the first Midwestern State freshman to open her career with three consecutive 10-point game since recent Hall of Inductee Lindy Lombard accomplished the feat in 1998-99.
