Breast Cancer Awareness highlights busy soccer weekend at MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State soccer programs face the same opponents this weekend at the MSU Soccer Field.

The men and women take on Eastern New Mexico in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Friday night before taking on rival West Texas A&M in a twin bill with a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.

But the Mustangs need your help with a common opponent Friday night with the annual Breast Cancer Awareness games.

"This is quickly becoming a very special night," MSU women's coach Jeff Trimble said. "This is very important and meaningful."

The teams will sell t-shirts for $5 and pink rings for $1 as well as taking donations with all proceeds going to help fight cancer.

"It's a great thing for the community and I am proud of the way the guys have stepped up to take part," MSU men's coach Doug Elder said. "I think a lot of people aren't even aware of how important. Hopefully we're able to help people."

The common opponent: Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. It is considered a heterogeneous disease - differing by individual, age group, and even kinds of cells within the tumors themselves. -- NationalBreastCancer.com

Women: Eastern New Mexico (3-7, 0-3) at No. 21 MSU (8-1, 3-0), 5 p.m.

No. 21 Midwestern State rolls into the weekend on a four-match winning streak and are one of two remaining undefeated, untied teams in the Lone Star Conference.

The Mustangs (8-1) are paced by junior forwards Kelsey Hill and Lindsay Pritchard who have combined for 13 goals, while the MSU back line has limited the opposition to 7.1 shots per game.

Eastern New Mexico brings a 3-7 mark into the Friday night's contest and have been outscored 5-0 in three Lone Star Conference contests which includes losses to West Texas A&M, Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Zias are led by freshman Sydney Tucker and sophomore Brook Serrano who have scored five goals each while senior Calie Rush has scored four goals.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Zias by a 6-1 margin including a 1-0 win last season in Portales.

Men: No. 23 Eastern New Mexico (7-2-1) at No. 3 MSU (8-0, 1-0), 7 p.m.

Midwestern State returns to the comfortable confines of the MSU Soccer Field were the Mustangs have pieced together a 26-game unbeaten streak since falling in the regular season finale in 2007.

The Mustangs are the only undefeated and untied team in NCAA Division II entering the weekend against two critical LSC opponents.

MSU features a balanced attack as 10 different players have scored at least two goals for the nation's top goal scoring team at 3.50 goals per match.

Junior forward David Freeland leads the way with four goals, while VcMor Eligwe, Tex McCullough, Paulo Teixeira, Nathan Fitzgerald, Bryce Taylor and Sam Broadbent all have three tallies each.

The Mustangs also rank second in NCAA Division II with a goals against average of 0.38 led by senior All-America goalkeeper Raul Herrera, who has posted a 23-3-5 career record as the MSU keeper.

Eastern New Mexico is led by senior forward Emerson Rodrigues with eight goals and three assists while sophomore Kal Herbert adds six goals and five assists for the Greyhounds, who average 2.80 goals a contest.

Midwestern State has won each of the 13 matches of the series that dates back to 2004.
