Midwestern drops fourth-striaght, falls to ACU 4-1

SAN ANTONIO - Abilene Christian chased Midwestern State starter Katie Petersen in the fifth inning as the Wildcats rolled to a 4-1 win Saturday afternoon at the St. Mary's NCAA Division II Classic at the SAISD Spring Sportsplex.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Katie Cornelison stroked a double to right field to plate Jessica Shiery.

The duo was too much for Petersen and the Mustangs as they combined for five of ACU's eight hits as Sheiry went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Cornelison hammered out two hits and drove in Sheiry in the first.

Sheirry would chase Petersen in the fifth inning when she launched a two-run blast to right-center field to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.

MSU's Brittney Tanner came on to pitch a hitless 1 2/3 innings in relief to cap a solid weekend for the sophomore from Burkburnett. Tanner allowed four earned runs on six hits over 15 2/3 inning while striking out 14 batters during the St. Mary's Classic.

The Mustangs scratched for a run in the sixth inning after Nicki Duff reached and advanced to second on an error by ACU right fielder Brooke Whittlesey. Brittany Dumas then delivered a pinch-hit single through the right side to account for MSU's lone run of the contest.
