WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's freshman duo of
Nicki Duff and
Mallory Mooney continued to shine Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs clinched the MSU Invitational championship with a 9-1 run-rule win over Lincoln (Mo.) University in five innings at Mustangs Park.
Duff notched her seventh multiple-hit game of the season by going 2-for-3 with her first career double while driving in three runs. The Plano native also stole a base for the fourth-straight game.
Mooney, a 5-8 freshman from Mesquite, extended her hitting streak eight games while going 3-for-3 to raise her season batting average to a robust .390.
It was Duff who highlighted MSU's four-run second inning with a two-run double to center field, but
Sarah Weary also showed her potential by addind two hits of her won.
The freshman shortstop from Burkburnett stroked a two-run triple to key a four-run third inning before sophomore
Alyson Reynolds her second homer of the season to dead center to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Junior
Katie Petersen allowed hit and had three strikeouts in three innings of work to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Freshman
Kaelee Kramer allowed a run on three hits in two innings of relief.
Yet another freshman,
Brittany Dumas, connected on two more hits and scored a run.
Midwestern State faces off with Texas Woman's University Tuesday night at Pioneer Field in Denton. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m.
