WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Chris Hagan poured in a season-high 29 points to lead No. 23 Midwestern State to a 96-89 win over Central Oklahoma in Lone Star Conference crossover play Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The improved the Mustangs' best start in over a decade to 8-0 while stretching the home court win streak to 16-straight games.
And the defending LSC North Division champion Bronchos kept it close, but never severely threatened down the stretch.
Central Oklahoma claimed its only lead of the night when Dauntae Williams converted a steal into a layup 1:27 into the game to give the Bronchos a 4-3 lead.
Williams proved a thorn in the Mustangs side as the 6-4 junior guard went for a game-high 28 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Bronchos.
The Mustangs used a 19-4 run midway through the first half after Williams tied the game at 10-10 with a layup with 14:23 to go in the first half.
Junior forward
Charlie Logan kickstarted the run with a driving dunk in the run which was fueled by 3-pointers from
Adrian Van Buren and Hagan as the Mustangs pulled away for a 29-14 lead on Hagan's triple with 8:27 to go until intermission.
Van Buren netted 12 of his season-high 16 points in the opening stanza and also finished with a campaign-best seven rebounds.
Midwestern maintained a double-digit lead throughout much of the second half, but Bronchos would surge back to within 92-87 after Chris Rhymes appeared to ram his shoulder through MSU senior forward
Rashad Austin's chest with 44 seconds remaining.
Rhymes completed the layup and the three-point play, but the Bronchos would get no closer as Hagan closed out the win by hitting 4-of-6 free throws in the game's final minute.
Hagan connected on 8-of-11 shots from the field including three 3-pointers and was 10-of-14 from the charity stripe.
He joined in double figures by Van Buren,
Jason Ebie (13 points, 7 assists),
Anthony Moore (11 points, eight rebounds) and Austin (10 points, four rebounds).
Midwestern State faces Southeastern Oklahoma State on Dec. 12 at Bloomer Sullivan Arena in Durant. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. or 25 minutes after conclusion of the women's game which begins at 6.
