Mustangs hang tough with UTSA, but falls 74-65

SAN ANTONIO - Devin Gibson and Chris Allen dropped in 14 points each to lead a group of four UTSA players in double figures as the Roadrunners pulled away late for a 74-65 exhibition win over Midwestern State Saturday night at the Convocation Center.

The Mustangs battled the NCAA Division I Southland Conference opponent closely throughout much of the contest.

"We competed and played hard, but we just need more practice and time playing together," MSU coach Grant McCasland said. "We got fatigued with our lack of depth at guard and with foul trouble."

Senior forward Rashad Austin kick started a 9-0 run by hitting a pair of jumpers in the paint midway through the first half before Adrian Van Buren canned his third 3-pointer of the contest give MSU a 23-22 lead.

Senior forward Chris Williams hit a pair of free throws with 9:16 to go in the opening half to close the run and give the Mustangs a 25-22 lead.

The Mustangs would lead by as many as five points in the first half before UTSA's Demarco Stepter completed an 8-3 run to give the Roadrunners a 36-34 lead with 1:16 remaining in the first, but Van Buren beat the buzzer with his fourth trey of the first half to give Midwestern a 37-36 lead at the half.

MSU took its last lead when Austin hit a jumper in the paint go give the Mustangs a 48-47 advantage with 11:51 to go.

Van Buren paced Midwestern with 14 points - all in the first half - while Austin added 13 points and seven rebounds.

"It was a really gutsy effort by Rashad," McCasland said of Austin who hampered by a sore back.

The Mustangs committed 32 fouls, while UTSA was whistled for just 13 and enjoyed 41-10 advantage in charity stripe attempts.

MSU opens the season against Trinity (Texas) next Sunday at Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Edward's University next Sunday in Austin. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.

"It was a good experience to play a long, athletic team on the road," McCasland said. "It was a good test for prepare to get where we want to be."
