Mustangs notables

MSU DOMINANT IN OPENING ROUND MATCHES... The Mustangs improved to 6-0 all-time in Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championships first rounds with Thursday's 2-1 win over Abilene Christian. MSU will play in the conference semifinals for the 14th-straight seasons while advancing to the finals on five occasions. The Mustangs last finals appearance came in 2005.

BRISTOW BRILLIANT IN FIRST ROUND... Midwestern State senior midfielder Kari Bristow scored two goals in a single match for the first time in her career. Bristow converted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute before knocking in the game winner on a cross from Brandy O'Neal 4:01 into the first overtime. It was Bristow's seventh game winning goal of her career. She now has seven made penalty kicks also stands as a school record.

BERNICK, BRISTOW, HILL REPEAT AS ALL-LSC PICKS... Seniors Kat Bernick and Kari Bristory and sophomore Kelsey Hill repeated All-Lone Star Conference First-Team selections, while senior Jaime Pompey garnered second-team mention. Junior Kendra Clemons, sophomore Lindsay Pritchard and freshman Mallory Whitworth gained honorable mention.

HILL IS LSC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK... Sophomore forward Kelsey Hill garnered Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring two goals to lift MSU to a 3-0 win over Abilene Christian Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. It was her third multiple-goal performance of the season as scored two goals in back-to-back wins at Oklahoma Baptist and Texas A&M International on Sep. 22 and 25, respectively. Hill leads the Mustangs with eight goals this season after scoring 17 in 2008.

BRISTOW BECOMES MSU'S TOP HELPER... Senior midfielder Kari Bristow became MSU's all-time assists leader when her corner kick found Kat Bernick in the 51st minute of MSU's 3-0 win over Abilene Christian on Oct. 30 at the MSU Soccer Field. It was the Tyler native's 22nd career assists allowing her to pass former Midwestern standout Dayna Sanders, who had 21 assists from 2000-03.

BRISTOW, HILL JOIN MSU's 50-POINT CLUB... Senior midfielder Kari Bristow became the sixth player in MSU women's soccer history to account for 50 career points when she scored a goal and added an assist at Texas A&M International on Sep. 25. Sophomore striker Kelsey Hill needed just 38 career matches to amass 50 points after scoring two goals in a 3-0 win over Abilene Christian on Oct. 30 in Wichita Falls. Bristow and Hill each have 52 points.

SENIORS PLAY HERE... Midwestern State's all-senior back line of Amy Smith, Jaime Pompey, Kat Bernick and Megan Hanlon have started 17 matches together this season while helping the Mustangs post a school-record 11 shutouts. MSU ranks 12th in NCAA Division II with a 0.54 goals against average and is 14th in shutout percentage at 0.611. The quartet played a key role in helping MSU post a program-record six-straight shutouts from Sep. 17 against Northwood (2-0) to Oct. 4 versus Texas A&M-Commerce (1-0).

CLEMONS IS KEY... Junior Kendra Clemons is the ultimate plugger for the Mustangs as she has the ability to attack from the central midfield or is a more than capable fill-in on the back line. The Odessa native tied a school record with three assists at Texas A&M International on Sep. 25. Clemons has tallied eight goals and posted 15 assists during her three seasons at Midwestern.

PRITCHARD BECOMES A TOP OPTION... Sophomore forward Lindsay Pritchard has tallied points in seven of her 18 matches this season. The Whitehouse native scored two goals against Northwood on Sep. 17, then netted two more and added an assist at Texas A&M International on Sep. 25. Pritchard then tallied goals in consecutive Lone Star Conference contests against Texas A&M-Commerce on Oct. 4 and against Northeastern State on Oct. 9. She is second on the team with seven goals and tops the Mustangs with 17 points.

ROOKIE SENSATION... Goalkeeper Mallory Whitworth has enjoyed a sensational freshman season for the Mustangs. The McKinney native is second in the Lone Star Conference and 11th in NCAA Division II with a 0.45 goals against average. Whitworth is eighth in the country with a .902 save percentage. Both numbers would stand as single-season program records if the campaign ended today. Whitworth went 584:14 of field time without allowing a goal between Sep. 5 when New Mexico Highland's Jessica Heninger scored in the 65th minute and Oct. 18 when she let in a goal against West Texas A&M in the 87th minute.

NATIONAL RANKINGS... Midwestern State spent six weeks in the NSCAA/adidas national poll this season while achieving the program's highest ever national ranking. The Mustangs carried a No. 10 ranking in the Sep. 29th and Oct. 6th polls.
