Western State bounces Mustangs, 71-53

DURANGO, Colo. - It sure seemed worse than what the stat sheet reflected Friday afternoon at the Fort Lewis Skyhawk Classic.

Western State (Colo.) dominated the glass and hit 10 3-pointers on its way to a 71-53 win over Midwestern State at Whalen Gym.

"They had 19 offensive rebounds at halftime and we just couldn't get a board," MSU coach Noel Johnson said. "We just aren't very tough right now. We need to find the right combinations that will play hard for us."

The Mountaineers (1-0) controlled the glass by a robust 57-29 margin and out-hustled MSU for 29 offensive boards as Western State owned a 19-3 edge in second-chance points.

Senior guard Amber Murray didn't miss any of her five 3-point attempts to finish with a game-high 21 points and was joined by Brooke Pendergraft who hit two treys and was 7-of-9 from the line to also accounted for 21 points and nine rebounds.

The two were the only Mountaineers in double figures, but Western State had five players finish with at least six rebounds including Pendergraft, Forbes (10), Trujillo (9), Natalie Giese (6) and Katie Hall (6).

The Mountaineers used a quick 6-0 run fueled by a Krista Cona jumper and free throw followed by a Brooke Pendergraft 3-pointer which gave Western State its first 10-point lead of the gam at 27-17 with 8:34 to go in the opening half.

The Moutaineers led by as many as 13 in the first half before consecutive baskets by sophomore guard Karissa Lang cut the advantage to 34-25 at the half.

Western State controlled the second half, gradually pulling away to lead by as many as 20 when Murray canned her fifth trey of the game to put the Moutaineers up 70-50 with 57 seconds to play.

Junior forward Nolisha Markham paced the Mustangs with 14 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Savannah Carver splashed in 10 of her 13 points in the second half.

Junior guard Aqueelah Watkins added 11 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Midwestern State closes the Skyhawk Classic against No. 5 Fort Lewis (Colo.) at Whalen Gym. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (Central).
