Petersen, MSU too much for TexAnns

DURANT, Okla. - Katie Petersen weaved a five-hit shutout and drove in three runs at the plate to lead Midwestern State to an 8-0 run-rule win over Tarleton State in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament Friday night at Durant Multi-Sports Complex.

Petersen, who improved to 24-7, was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a pair of singles to guide the Mustangs (34-25) into a winner's bracket matchup with No. 3 Southeastern Oklahoma State.

First pitch for that game is set for 7:30 on Friday night.

Petersen's two-run double off of the left-field fence in the second inning gave MSU a 2-0 lead and that was all the support that the sophomore LSC North Division Pitcher of the Year would need.

She fanned seven and walked two in her 21st complete game of the season.

Senior left fielder Ashley Kuchenski extended her hitting streak to 13 games with an run-scoring single in the fourth and Petersen added her third RBI of the game with a single through the left side to push the Midwestern State advantage to 4-0.

The Mustangs forced Tarleton starter Brooke Saulters, who was an LSC South first-team selection, out of the game in the fourth. Sauters took the loss to fall to 15-12 while allowing four runs - all earned - on six hits while striking out two and walking two in 4 2/3 innings.

MSU put the game away with a four-run sixth inning keyed by Kristen Stonecipher's two-run ground-rule double that stuck in the temporary fence in left field.

Stonecipher and Lindsey Voigt added two hits each for the Mustangs, who pounded 10 hits.

Tarleton State's Tami Sutton and April Gonzalez accounted for four of the TexAnns' five hits with two hits each.

Tarleton fell to 27-23.
