DENTON, Texas – Ashley Kuchenski turned in her best start of the season to lead Midwestern State to a 5-1 Game 2 win over Texas Woman's University Wednesday night at Pioneer Field.
The win completed a doubleheader sweep for the Mustangs, who improved to 23-12 by winning their fifth-straight game. Texas Woman's fell to 10-26.
Midwestern State has now won six of its last seven games and 13 of its last 16 and will open the Lone Star Conference Crossover against Angelo State Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. It will be the first of seven games against LSC South Division competition.
Kuchenski hurled four scoreless frames before leaving with a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. The senior from Magnolia struck out to and walked one to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Katie Petersen earned her second save of the day and third of the season, but had to work through some trouble. She allowed one run on four hits as TWU left runners on second and third in the seventh.
Kellie Sledge drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the first run in the second inning, but MSU was unable to inflict more damage as it left the bases loaded.
Kristen Stonecipher doubled the Mustangs' lead with a towering homer to left field before MSU put the game away with three runs in the top of the sixth keyed by
Maranda Bishop's RBI single and
Tabitha Yannetti's run-scoring double.
Stonecipher and Sledge paced an eight-hit Midwestern attack with two hits each.
