Petersen, Mustangs drill East Central 8-0 in Game 1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State slugged out eight hits and scored seven runs to advantage of two East Central University errors in the second inning as the Mustangs came away with an 8-0 Lone Star Conference North Division win Monday afternoon in Game 1 at Mustangs Park.

Amanda Potysman reached on ECU shortstop Stacia Lemons' fielding error with one out, then Katie Petersen singled and Ashley Kuchenski to load the bases for Lindsey Voigt.

Voigt hit an RBI groundout to shortstop after East Central catcher Stephannie Larriba dropped a foul pop-up to extend the inning.

Then the Mustangs made ECU starter Kayla Shepherd pay.

Kellie Sledge and Kristen Stonecipher hit back-to-back run-scoring singles before Jessica Rodriguez lined a double to the right-field gap to plate Stonecipher.

Lauren Craig then chased Rodriguez home with a single to left field before Tabitha Yannetti and Potysman singled and drew a walk as six-straight MSU hitters would reach base before Shepherd was pulled from the contest.

Petersen greeted Lady Tigers' reliever Randee Crokett with a ringing two-run double to left field before Kuchenski ended the inning with a pop-up to first base as 13 MSU batters came to the plate in an eight-run seven-hit frame.

Petersen, who started in the circle for the Mustangs, allowed two hits and struck out three to improve to 15-3 on the season while combining with Brittany Tanner for the five-inning shutout.

Tanner hurled to a pair of hitless innings and struck out one.

Sledge, Stonecipher and Petersen paced MSU's nine-hit attack with two hits each.

Midwestern State improved to 20-12 on the season and 7-4 in divisional play, while East Central dropped to 13-14-1 and 4-7.
