EDMOND, Okla. – Midwestern State's
Ashley Kuchenski pitched four shutout innings of relief as the Mustangs claimed a 6-3 win over Central Oklahoma in Game 2 to earn a split with the Bronchos Tuesday afternoon at Broncho Field.
The Mustangs improved to 18-11 on the season and 5-3 in the Lone Star Conference North Division, while UCO fell to 13-7 and 5-3.
Kuchenski (3-2), who claimed her first win since Feb. 9, snapped a three-game personal skid by allowing four hits while walking two and striking out two in four scoreless innings.
It was the first winning decision for the Mustangs not claimed by ace
Katie Petersen since Brittany Tanner claimed a victory over Palm Beach Atlantic on Feb. 22 – a span of nine winning decisions.
Tanner, who made the start in Game 2, allowed three runs – all earned – on seven hits while striking out two.
The Mustangs struck for three unearned runs in top of the second keyed by a two-run double by
Lindsey Voigt and an RBI-single by
Maranda Bishop to take a 3-0 lead.
But the Bronchos clawed with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning as Molly Shivers hit her third homer of the season and Hillary Brandt stroked a run-scoring double to knot the game at 3-3.
The Mustangs took advantage of another throwing by UCO third baseman Jodi Craig in the third as
Kristen Stonecipher added another unearned after reaching on a lead-off single to left.
Lindsey Voigt tacked on a run in the third after stealing third on the front end of a double steal. Bishop was caught in a run down on the back end, allowing Voigt to score.
The Mustangs another run in the fifth courtesy of a Brittany Zimmerman illegal pitch.
Bishop and Stonecipher accounted for four of MSU's five hits with two singles each, while Alley Roberts paced an 11-hit UCO attack by going 3-for-4.
The Mustangs return to action on Saturday at East Central in Ada, Okla. First pitch for the twin bill is set for 1 p.m.
