Errors prove costly as Mustangs fall to UCO in Game 1, 5-3

EDMOND, Okla. – Central Oklahoma plated four unearned runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 win over Midwestern State in Game 1 Tuesday afternoon at Broncho Field.

The Bronchos improved to 13-6 on the season and 5-2 in Lone Star Conference North Division play, while the Mustangs dropped to 17-11 and 4-3.

MSU got another sterling performance from sophomore starter Katie Petersen, who allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out five and walking on in six innings.

But Petersen was saddled with the loss to fall to 13-3 on the season after the Mustangs committed a pair of errors that allowed the Bronchos to extend the fourth inning.

The loss ended a school-record 13-decision winning streak for Peterson, who hadn't lost since Feb. 2 against Eastern New Mexico in the St. Mary's Classic.

The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead when Kristen Stonecipher's single up the middle scored Maranda Bishop in the top of the first inning.

But UCO capitalized on two left-field errors in the fourth in a four-run, two-hit featured by a Kelsey Tiger run-scoring single to give the Bronchos a 4-1 lead.

Bishop stroked a one-out triple in the fifth and was followed by Jessica Rodriguez' second homer of the season to pull MSU within in 4-3.

Central Oklahoma's Alley Roberts gave the Bronchos an insurance run in the bottom of the inning when she hit her second homer of the year to put UCO up by two runs.

Rodriguez paced a nine-hit Mustangs' attack by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Bishop added two hits, including her program-record seventh triple of the season.
