CLEARWATER, Fla. - Tampa's Heather Van Landingham and Deanna Henriott combined for a four-hit shutout as Midwestern State dropped its final contest at the Eckerd College Spring Invitational 3-0 to Spartans Sunday at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
The Mustangs (9-8) finished 2-3 over the weekend and leave Florida with a 3-4 mark after splitting a doubleheader with Tampa (12-4) on Thursday.
The Spartans struck for two runs in the first inning on a pair of run-scoring singles by Samantha Becker and Krystal Crooks, then added an unearned run in the fifth on a Jessica Tejas sacrifice fly.
The Mustangs were unable to take advantage of a two-on and one-out opportunity in the first inning after
Lindsey Voigt led off with a single, stole second base and advanced to third when
Maranda Bishop grounded out to the pitcher.
Kristen Stonecipher drew a walk and stole second, but Van Landingham got
Jessica Rodriguez to fly out to right and got
Lauren Craig looking to end the threat.
Midwestern State would strand seven runners.
Van Landingham (5-2) allowed three hits while striking out three and walking two before giving way to Henriott, who earned her second save by allowing one hit over the final three innings.
The Mustangs were led by Bishop at the plate as the junior center fielder was 2-for-3.
Freshman Brittany Tanner (3-2) took the loss for the Mustangs allowed three runs - two earned - on seven hits while striking out five and walking three.
