CLEARWATER, Fla. – Midwestern State swept through pool play at the Eckerd College Spring Invitational claiming a 9-5 win over Palm Beach Atlantic and an 8-2 victory over Nova Southeastern Friday at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
The Mustangs (9-5) continue pool play Saturday by facing host Eckerd College (2-13) at 8 a.m. and Saint Leo (7-1) at 2 p.m.
The event culminates with a single elimination tournament on Sunday.
Sophomore
Lauren Craig's three-run homer highlighted a six-run third inning to lead the Mustangs to a 9-5 win over Palm Beach Atlantic.
Brittany Tanner, who evened her record at 2-2, allowed five runs on four this while walking four and hitting two batsmen. Tanner struck out five.
Senior
Kristen Stonecipher paced the MSU attack hit by going 2-for-3, while
Maranda Bishop scored three runs while going 1-for-2 and drew three walks.
The Mustangs got two-run homers from
Lindsey Voigt and
Kristen Stonecipher to punctuate a pair three-run innings to pull away from Nova Southeastern 8-2 in the nightcap.
The Sharks (6-7) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth, but MSU starter
Katie Petersen induced a pair fielder's choice ground outs before Nova's Brittany Phillips popped out to left field to end the threat.
Petersen, who improved to 5-2 on the season, allowed two runs – one earned – while scattering six hits and walking five. The sophomore right-hander struck out five.
The Mustangs, who had jumped out to a 2-1 lead on four first-inning hits, got an RBI-double from sophomore shortstop
Tabitha Yannetti before Voigt blasted a Dani Caron offering over the left-field fence to give the Mustangs a 5-2 advantage.
MSU struck for three more runs in the sixth inning.
Bishop drove in Voigt, who had reached on a leadoff single and stole second, before Stonecipher launched her third homer of the season to give the Mustangs a commanding six-run lead.
Voigt paced the 12-hit Midwestern attack by going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, while Bishop and Stonecipher had two hits each.
