Preview: Mustangs play host to Angelo State Wednesday

Midwestern State faces Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference South Division contest Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

For the record

The Mustangs (9-14, 3-7) have lost their last four games, but have played well at D.L. Ligon Coliseum this season where MSU has notched a 7-4 mark.

Angelo State (19-6, 6-4) takes its third shot at its 20th win this season as the Rambelles have dropped their last two games to West Texas A&M and Abilene Christian. Prior to that, ASU had won 16 of 18 games.

What's at stake

Midwestern State attempts to stay mathematically alive for its first trip to the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament since 2002-03.

The Rambelles can clinch a berth in next month's LSC Championships in Bartlesville with a pair of wins this week as they return home to face Eastern New Mexico on Saturday.

Who's hot

Midwestern State senior guard Stacey Staten continued her strong play by recording a career-high 24 points against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday. The Mansfield product topped her previous high game of 19 which was also set against the Javelinas earlier this season. Staten shot 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) in her two games against TAMUK and even was 2-for-2 from 3-point range in Saturday's win. Staten had hit just 3-of-26 (11.5 percent) from the arc going into Saturday's contest in Kingsville.

Angelo State guard Camille Perkins poured in a season-high 35 points as the Rambelles fell at Abilene Christian 77-67 Sunday at Moody Coliseum. The freshman from Groesbeck went 8-of-18 from the field including a pair of 3's while converting 17 of her 19 charity tosses in 40 minutes of action. Perkins is in the midst of a banner frosh season as she has scored at least 13 points in each of her last 12 games while averaging 17.7 a contest during the stretch.

The series

Angelo State captured the all-time lead in the series 22-21 with a 70-47 win over the Mustangs at Junell Center/Stephens Arena on Jan. 30. The Rambelles have won six of the last seven games in the series with Midwestern State's lone win coming in a 53-51 decision on Feb. 3, 2007 in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Moving up the charts

Midwestern State senior forward Brittni Morrison moved into seventh place on the school's all-time 3-point makes list on Feb. 6 when she hit three treys to move past Angie Faurot, who had 88 from 2004-06. She has made 96 3-pointers in her three seasons at MSU and 118 in her collegiate career after she connected on 22 in her freshman season at Southeastern Oklahoma in 2004-05. Morrison's 54 3-point makes this season are the seventh most in school history.
